Where the food began

My mom knows how to stock a kitchen.

She’s been eating healthy and delicious foods that sound scary to most people since before I can remember. Sure I was horrified as a teenager when friends were over and I’d open the freezer only to have about 80 pounds of frozen herbs come cascading out, but I quite appreciate it now!

With my mom’s kitchen-stocking abilities, I didn’t have to look very far for breakfast fixings this morning. I started by mixing up some yogurt-chia pudding with 3 tbsp 0% Fage (too pricy for me to buy, but mom knows how to splurge for quality), 2 tbsp regular plain nonfat yogurt, 2 tbsp part-skim ricotta, 1/2 tbsp chia seeds, 1/4 cup water, cinnamon, and vanilla. While the chia seeds worked their absorbant magic, I set to work on component #2: fruit!

I chopped a banana, an apple, grapes, kiwi, and pomegranate:

For mom, I topped about 1.5 cups of the fruit salad with half of the chia-yogurt pudding, Artisana cacao bliss that I brought for her to try, and a bit more cinnamon:

I only gave myself about 3/4 cup of fruit (I wasn’t overly hungry after last night) with the other half of the chia-yogurt pudding, freshly ground Whole Foods almond butter (again, mom knows how to splurge where it’s worth it!), more cinnamon, and a bit of ground flax:

I feel healthy and revived 🙂

Mom’s in with clients now (she’s a psychotherapist and sees them in her home office), but we’re planning on a walk once she’s done. It’s already 85 degrees out!

In whose kitchen, other than your own, do you feel most comfortable helping yourself?

Mara has been crafting up a storm! Go check this post to see the cutest thing ever and how you can win it!

ah, the comforts of home 🙂

I feel really good raiding the fridge at my cousin’s house. She has two young children, so there’s always some good food in there 🙂

have a good time at home!

The only other kitchen I feel comfortable in besides my own is my Mom’s. Now, this doesn’t necessarily mean that she ever has anything that I want to eat…it just means that it still feels like home…after FOURTEEN YEARS. Man, I’m old.

Most, if not all, of the food at my parent’s house is processed garbage. It’s really gross, and I’ve tried to instill the value of good, whole, unprocessed food in their lives, but to no avail. My dad is addicted to Ritz crackers with Skippy peanut butter, and my mom would give her left arm for a bag of Fritos if it was the last bag on earth.

When I drive home (6 hours), I stop at the grocery store on the way so that I have something to eat while I visit…otherwise, it’s back to the eating habits that I grew up on. Gross.

Your mom knows how to stock a kitchen and you know how to stock a breakfast bowl! You can make breakfast for me ANY day.

The only person whose fridge I ever raid is my own but I would love to be comfortable enough to raid everyone’s kitchens who I encounter. I really just want to be a professional kitchen organizer/healthifier when I grow up. I could just raid people’s cupboards and fridges for a living! Now that would be ideal 😉

My mom raised me to be a nutrition maniac! I feel most comfortable helping myself in my mom fridge, and it’s always full of healthy, nutrition-packed foods (like your moms!) We are lucky!

Can yo mama stock my fridge? And buy my fresh almond butter from WF? I would greatly appreciate!

Of course I feel comfortable in my kitchen, but then I also feel perfectly at home in my 2 best friends kitchens! I am always making brownies or food when I am at their houses!

    Dang mami!
I love the random red pepper on the shelf. Ha!
I am all about my parents’ fridge! I will root that thing out, rearrange all the mustards (why do they have 8+ varieties?), and eat while standing in front of it. Only with my parents!

You always have such amazing eats! And your Mom’s fridge is awesome! I love those herbs!

I only feel comfortable helping myself in my family’s kitchen. It’s kinda like my own when I’m here during the summer. During the school year I have my own apartment, but I’m staying with my family this summer. So, I definitely have no problems helping myself 😀

Wow…your mom is very organized. My mother goes to the grocery store every day, so our refrigerator never gets very full.
I only feel comfortable helping myself in my parent’s kitchen. At my in-laws, they tell me to help myself, but I usually won’t.
