Still expanded

Well, the gluttony certainly knows no bounds.

Kate and I went out to spend the afternoon with Gina in her ‘hood. We started admirably with a five-mile run — six arduous and windy loops around Marine Park: 55 minutes, 454 calories, 151 average heart rate, 179 max. When we got back to Gina’s house, her husband Chris surprised her with a dozen roses and TWO boxes of JoMart chocolates which we ALL attacked immediately (thanks, Chris!).

Specialty chocolates:

img_3928

I think I had at least one of each kind. I remember a 2-layer hazelnut square, dark chocolate-covered oreo, marshmalow-filled coffee bean truffle, chocolate-filled dark chocolate truffle, peanut butter cup, and there were probably more.

img_3936img_3941img_3948

Oh, and this butterfingery peanut butter puff was the best one:

img_3935

Box #2 was full of broken chunks of dark and milk chocolate. The dark chocolate tasted just like cocoa, sooooooo good. I ate several (fyi, whenever I use the term “several,” I mean at least seven) pieces because I was on a roll.

img_3931

And then we began preparations for our actual Valentine meal (because the chocolate wasn’t it, in case you were wondering).

Gina worked on the waffles until she made a mess:

img_3926

Chris had to take over:

img_3945img_3943

Meanwhile, Gina’s ice cream maker had been sitting on her counter right where Kate and I left it last time we were there! The “ice cream” mix I prepared this morning and brought over included … well, what didn’t it include?

img_3920

There was nonfat cottage cheese, nonfat Greek yogurt, cranberries, apple, banana, apple butter, strawberries, valentine m&ms that Deborah gave me at work yesterday, crumbled bits of chocolate-covered pretzel from my blogger secret cupid, shredded coconut, vanilla, dates, and maybe more? Kate brilliantly brought along some mini red velvet cupcakes that she had frozen after her dinner party a while back, so we crumbled those into the mix, too. The end result was some amazingly delicious and rich “strawberry cheesecake ice cream”!

img_3950

Here’s my first plate, topped with banana, more chocolate chunks, and crumbled hazelnut thins that Gina brought home from her trip to the London Harrod’s last fall:

img_3954

Here’s my second plate:

img_3960

My camera didn’t make it to the third plate in time. Well, the food didn’t actually make it to the plate before I inhaled it, either. But it looked something like this:

img_3964

I wasn’t actually hungry for any of this, by the way. But it tasted good, and I couldn’t stop!

Then we broke into the giant chocolate heart brownie that Chris’ mom made:

img_3965

With our bites:

img_3973

I had seconds of the brownie, too .

When I got home, I did a serious reorganization of the contents of the fridge, freezer, cabinets, and pantry. It’s hard to keep track of stuff when you live with two other people! This was a very stressful process, and I have to admit that I continued to snack on too much of too many unhealthy things while I worked (the binge finally ended when I sat down with a piece of pumpkin kibbi and then brushed my teeth). I discovered that Brigitte actually had SEVEN boxes of white rice, three of which were open and the SAME brand. I did a lot of consolidating, and I am happy to say that everything is now accessible! We’ll see how long it stays this way …

So anyway, I feel ill from all of the junk I’ve been downing nonstop this week, and I’m so excited to feel better tomorrow and return to a life of balanced nutrition! I finally got around to dyeing my hair tonight, and everyone knows that fresh color is the ideal setting for a fresh start :-D. See you on the other side!

Heart health

So, stats for the gym this morning (arms on the step and 30 mins StairMaster): 1 hour and 7 minutes, 399 calories, average heart rate 127, max 157. Now, here’s where having both a blog and a heart rate monitor come in handy. One month ago, for the exact same workout, these were my stats: 1 hour and 6 minutes, 539 calories, average heart rate 149, max 176. As I mentioned yesterday, this is both good news and bad news. Clearly, my fitness is increasing. But now I need to change things up ASAP! What are your suggestions for increasing intensity while continuing to combine strength and cardio in under one hour???

Breakfast this morning was soymilky black tea and pumpkin pie crockpot oats:

img_3808

With 1/2 cup “yogurt,” 2 crumbled graham sticks, 1 Earl Grey Biscotti Bite, cinnamon, nutmeg, and a heart-shaped strawberry:

img_3819

My “yogurt” actually consisted of an immersion-blended combo of nonfat cottage cheese and Greek yogurt, cooked cranberries left from tart-making yesterday, cinnamon, vanilla, chopped dates, and a teeny bit of honey. I also may have stolen a small spoonful of real cream cheese icing that my roommate Brigitte made to frost the red velvet cake that she also made and plans to bring to a family gathering this weekend. Sorry, Brigitte — you know I can never resist your cream cheese icing!!

3. Remember, I need your help with exercise suggestions! 😀

Chocolate everywhere

This afternoon, I received the package from my Secret Blogger Cupid … and fellow New Yorker apparently! Nicole from Another One Bites the Crust sent these fun goodies:

GIANT Lindt milk chocolate hazelnut bar, conversation hearts, and chocolate-covered pretzel

GIANT Lindt milk chocolate hazelnut bar, conversation hearts, and chocolate-covered pretzel

I’m most excited about this:

img_3732

Some broke off during the photo shoot (whoops), so I had to eat it:

img_3735

I’ve done ok on my to-do list today but not as well as I’d hoped! Where does the time go?

1. run/yoga

2. CVS/library/grocery store

3. work homework

4. grad school homework

5. hair dye

6. BSI

7. contribution to work Valentine’s lunch

8. sorting student loan confusion

While out erranding, I got some unexpected groceries! After sampling a mozzarella ball and marinated mushrooms at the gourmet market, I went to the cheap grocery store and CVS for the following:

img_3724

2 library books, tp, 3 boxes of hair dye (on sale for $2.50 each!), pumpkin, vanilla, sunsweet ones (.75 off coupon), strawberries, molasses (because I used up roommate's last week!), oranges (for BSI), bear naked vanilla almond granola ($1.50 off coupon)

Total: $35. Food total only: $20!

While I worked on my BSI (keep reading for recipe), I did a bit of snacking. The hazelnut bar came at just the right time :-).

img_3757

(Ummm, I had quite a bit more than pictured, but I quickly broke it up into small pieces and put it in the freezer before too much damage was done!)

Also, had to “clean up” after myself while cooking and scrape all bowls (with my tongue):

img_3767

Dinner needed to be (somewhat) light. I had  steamed asparagus with a bit of grated homemade cheddar:

img_3796

Along with 1/3 of a wheat bagel and 1/3 of a nut and seed bagel with 1 tbsp peanut butter, a chopped date, and cinnamon:

img_3797

For dessert, I had the mini-version of my BSI submission (which also happens to be my contribution for the work Valentine’s lunch tomorrow and my entry for the Quaker True Delights recipe contest): Orange-Cranberry Dark Chocolate Heart Tart:

img_3791

Holy yum!! That’s right, VeggieGirl, I said it :-).

img_3792

And now back to the battle for a timely bedtime! Am I the only one who feels like every night is a race against the clock?

Blown away

It’s SO windy outside!! I had planned to run first thing this morning, but I was worried I’d get swept up and plunked down in Oz somewhere, so I decided to eat breakfast and do work homework until the howling tapered off a bit.

Today’s breakfast was the opposite of yesterday’s: yogurt ring-around-the-oatmeal.

img_3696

I had one cup pumpkin pie crockpot oats surrounded by 1/2 cup Greek yogurt and topped with 2 crumbled graham sticks, 1 chopped date, cinnamon, and nutmeg:

img_37011

The wind was still howling post-digestion, but I decided to suck it up and go out for a quick run anyway. First, I had this mini-snack of a spoonful of yogurt with three Kashi GoLean Crunch! clusters and a drizzle of soymilk:

img_3707

I did one loop around Prospect Park plus the jog from and to my apartment for a total of 4.1 miles. The wind may have been whipping debris in my face every 2.37 seconds, but the 53 degree sun felt nice :-). Stats: 44 minutes, 339 calories, 145 average heart rate, 163 max. I’ve noticed that my heart rate and amount of calories burned have a been a little lower this week … maybe I’m getting more in shape because of the extra running? But blah, that means I will have to step up the intensity!

When I got home, I put a piece of pumpkin kibbi in the oven to heat for lunch while I did the 20-minute Gentle Hatha #1 yoga download. I know I keep saying it, but this download is such a thorough and relaxing stretch!

Lunch took place immediately upon completion of the yoga:

img_3712

Along with soymilky chocolate caramel enchantment chai, I had a perfectly heated slice of pumpkin kibbi:

img_3716

And 1/2 cup immersion-blended mixture of nonfat cottage cheese and Greek yogurt topped with a chopped date and lots of powdered ginger:

img_3721

I also had half a grapefruit because it thought the yogurt was so pretty and couldn’t stay away:

img_3718

OK, time to get moving on the rest of today’s list. I’ve got errands, cooking, and more homework to bang out … and it’s already 1:00! Are you making progress on YOUR list today?

P.S. Go check N Her Shoes for info on another amazing giveaway!

I’m a winner!!

img_3565

Thinking of my oatmeal was the only thing keeping me going at the gym this morning. I did chest/back on the machines and 30 minutes stairmaster. I meant to run since I’m skipping running club tonight for a free movie with Gina, but I couldn’t bring myself to part with the idea of a half hour on the stairs with Us Weekly. Stats: 1 hour and 3 minutes, 343 calories, 121 average heart rate, 181 max.

Breakfast was another cup of pumpkin pie crockpot oats along with more soymilky vanilla creme tea:

img_3564

On the oats, I had 1/2 cup yogurt, two crumbled graham sticks, one crumbled earl grey biscotti bite (soo good on oatmeal!), cinnamon, and nutmeg:

img_3567

And exciting news! Brandi at Bran Appétit! has announced me as the winner of this week’s BSI: Spinach for my Citrus-Berry Spinach and Goat Cheese Ravioli with Balsamic Glaze. I feel so proud! This also means that some amazing chocolate truffles are on their way to me as a prize  :-D. Thanks, Brandi! Mara is going to be announcing the new contest somtime today, so make sure to check it out.

The rest of the day’s food is anyone’s guess. I packed a lunch, but you know how that goes! I’ll be back late tonight after the movie with an update.
