Groceries are becoming obsolete

Wow, free food just seems to breed more free food, and I’m loving it! I feel like everyone’s looking out for me — and that’s such a nice feeling in the midst of the working-full-time-for-free-while-in-grad-school lifestyle :-).

As Vianni left work last night, she announced to me, “Sarah, if I cook tonight, I am bringing you food tomorrow.” And she did not let me down! Just as she did last week, Vianni walked in this morning and immediately unloaded a tupperware of her seasoned chicken and vegetable rice onto my desk calendar/placemat:

img_3049

How yummy does that look?? I put it right in the fridge to await lunchtime.

And the food kept coming! I ate my orange as a mid-morning snack, and when I got back from my first visit of the day, there was a ripe banana sitting on my desk, also from Vianni. The banana is now chopped and happily resting in my freezer :-). I couldn’t sit down and eat with my coworkers because I had another visit at 1pm, but I joined them for a five-minute “pre-lunch” before I had to head out. Mildred shared her sopa de mondongo (and some avocado!) with me:

img_3043

When I was in Peru last summer, I always heard talk about mondongo, the miracle hangover cure. I never tried it because many foods in Peru were on the no-no list according to my Peruvian host family — food health standards there are, ummm, not enforced so much.  I ended up sick several times though, so I probably should have taken the risk anyway!

But back to today, yayyyy for new food experiences! I was so excited to finally join the I-have-eaten-mondongo club. The meat in mondongo is actually tripe — aka cow stomach — which might make some of you feel ill. But even though I’m not the hugest meat fan in the world, I’m all for experimentation in the name of cultural experience ;-). Now that you know what you’re looking at, here it is again:

img_3042

I only had those two little spoonfuls since I knew I’d be back in an hour or so for my real lunch … and what a feast I had! Vianni brought me a TON of food. I made myself a plate with some chicken, her rice mixed with the brown basmati (for whole grain health, of course) I’d brought, and about half of my curry on the side (for veggie-power):

img_3055

(In case you can’t tell, these are teeny dessert plates — not regular-sized dinner plates!)

This chicken was so good!

img_3056

And here’s a close-up of the yellow rice to brown rice ratio:

img_30571

Vianni brought me so much food that I was able to save some of the rice and chicken to have with the rest of my curry for lunch tomorrow and bring home an additional cup of rice (now in my fridge). Thank you Mildred and Vianni!

For lunch dessert, I had my Greek yogurt + apples + bananas + raisins + ginger:

img_3061

Perfectly filling! I ended up eating my afternoon snack of broccoli trees + roasted red pepper hummus around 3:30, and I had my apple as I was leaving work at 5:00 to tide me over until dinner. I did not end up eating the raisins + pb that I had packed to go with it (although I did have my five daily pillow mints from Belkis’ candy jar), and I still have the Quaker True Delights bar in my bag that I’ve been carrying around all week! Maybe it will come in handy tomorrow? It’s anyone’s guess!

Dinner

Normally, Tuesday is a double workout day, but today, it became an inadvertent rest day! I was up so late last night deliberating about the BSI that I opted for seven hours of sleep in favor of five hours of sleep followed by 5am gym. I was still planning to do running club tonight, but after a very hectic morning of running late and several false departures from my apartment (forgot my hair elastic, forgot my cell phone, lost my keys, etc.), I decided that I needed a night at home to regroup! Glad I did because it ended up snowing alllll day, and by the time 5pm rolled around, the only place I was headed was to my apartment. I made a quick little scramble of leftovers and some of this week’s food collection:

img_3070

In the teacup, we have the rest of last week’s GC tofu, yellow squash (from the stash I found last night at school), 1 date, and the final bit of goat cheese from the lecture I attended last Thursday. I sauteed everything with minced garlic, drizzled it with balsamic vinegar, and sprinkled it with coarse sea salt and freshly ground black pepper. Yummy and classy!

For dessert #1, I returned to my old stand-by: the Vitamuffin. This was a dark chocolate pomegranate vitatop with yogurt, honeydew (also from last night‘s findings), nutmeg, and ginger:

img_3072

And for dessert #2, a spoonful of the frozen carrot cake I saved from when Mildred brought it to work last week:

img_3079

Perfect way to end the day!

Oh, and speaking of how everyone is looking out for me, huuuuuuuuuge thank you to Erin Gunn, the most amazing friend who overnighted my camera battery to me last night because I left it at her apartment over the weekend! No one was home when the mailman tried to delivery it (of course), but I’m expecting redelivery within the next two days and will hopefully be able to return to my camera ASAP. In the meantime, thank you to roommate Brigitte for continuing to let me kidnap hers 24/7!!

And now it is bedtime because I will be returning to my 5am gym schedule tomorrow, snow or … snow.

Breakfast

I could think of nothing but oats when I got up this morning. I got my laundry going at the laundromat and then raced back to start preparing this week’s edition of crockpot oats: gingerbread spice oats! I had to run to the store for eggs and ginger root (and cheese samples!), bringing this week’s grocery tally to $31. The oats are gurgling away in the slowcooker as I write. Can’t wait to eat them tomorrow! This batch includes:

– 1 cup steel-cut oats

– 1 cup unsweetened Silk Soymilk

– 1 cup water

– 3 eggs

– 1 tsp vanilla

-4 small shredded apples

img_2885

– 1/2 bag fresh cranberries

img_2886

– 1 inch grated fresh ginger root

– 1/2 tbsp powdered ginger

– 1 tsp coarsely chopped whole cloves

img_2887

– 1 tbsp molasses

img_2891

Since I got such an early start, I decided to do the authentic slow-cooking five-hour method.

For today’s breakfast, I made a batch of stove-top Strawberry-Banana Cardamom Oatmeal with 1/4 cup old-fashioned oats, 1/4 cup unsweetened Silk, 1/4 cup water, 3 chopped strawberries, 1/3 mashed banana, coarsely chopped seeds of 3 cardamom pods, tsp vanilla, dash sea salt. I mixed in 1/4 cup plain yogurt and topped the oatmeal with 1 chopped almond toasted in dry skillet, cinnamon, and unsweetened coconut:

img_2901

So creamy!

img_2898

So laundry’s done, gingerbread spice oats are cooking in the crockpot, belly’s satisfied, and now it’s time to move on to studying. Be back later!

All is not lost

** I’m bookending this post with BSI reminders since we’re getting right down to the wire! Check here for more info. If you missed my announcement earlier, the BSI prize will include, amongst other things, two boxes of the RARE Celestial Seasonings Sugar Cookie Sleigh Ride tea, the best tea in the world. Are you not ridiculously excited right now??? **

I woke up around 8:00 this morning, and Erin and I set out (in her car!) to hunt down a location for our five-mile run (half marathon, here we come!). The first trail we checked was completely covered in snow and ice, but we lucked out with the second: a paved bike trail in Tibbetts Brook Park. The clear-enough-to-run portion of the trail was just over two miles long, so we ran the length and back plus did a little bit extra to make it a full five. While the trail was not completely covered in ice, we still had to “ballet run” over several slippery sections, slowing us down significantly. Stats: 57 minutes, 457 calories, 149 average heart rate, 164 max heart rate.

Back at the condo, I got started on breakfast:

img_2784

img_2776I popped two Nutrigrain waffles in the toaster and set out to develop some oatmeal pancakes! I found a packet of oatmeal in the cupboard that I recognized from the post-race goodies we received at Race for the Cure in September. I mixed the oatmeal with an egg, a splash of water, and some baking powder and baking soda. I Pam’d a pan and poured the batter in:

img_2777

Flipped when set:

img_2778

And spatula-ed the pancake into four pieces when it was done so that we each had two pancake quarters and a waffle. For the topping, I mixed some banana pieces I had saved from my mommy’s group at work yesterday with the last of Erin’s frozen blueberries and 1/4 cup plain yogurt.  A drizzle of real maple syrup and a dollop of berry jam from a local farm joined the yogurt topping:

img_2780

Delicious, if I do say so myself!

After breakfast, Erin and I continued our productive streak with more suburban car errands (yay!!). Accomplishments of the day: Erin’s car passed inspection, she successfully redeemed a Bed, Bath, & Beyond coupon, and I found another little mystery goody at Target to include as a BSI prize. Erin, the most generous hostess ever, capped this string of accomplishments with an offer to drive me allllll the way back to Brooklyn (saving me a 90-minute subway ride!), including a stop at Fairway, my favorite grocery store in the world!! If you live in this city, you know that the combination of a car + Fairway is pretty much a New Yorker’s dream come true. I only wish I hadn’t had so much food still left from last week in my apartment — if I had more fridge/freezer space, I would have taken advantage of the car to buy enough groceries for the next six months!

Once we arrived at Fairway, I wanted to capture the beauty of this foodie heaven with a photo, but when I tried to turn my camera on, nothing happened! I may have actually said the f-word (something I never do!) when I realized I had forgotten the battery/charger in the wall back up at Erin’s house. Ahhhhhhhh!! After all of that productivity, I was going to have to go all the way back to Yonkers with her to collect the battery and then take the subway home. DISASTER. Regardless, we forged on with the shopping. Expecting that I wouldn’t be home until at least 6:30 pm, I did my favorite trick of turning samples into lunch. I had cheese, mini pumpernickel rounds with olive oil and balsamic vinegar, and one of the best samples I’ve ever encountered: magic pop rice cakes with freshly ground (still warm!) almond butter, peanut butter, and honey roasted peanut butter. I piled the nut butter onto three different magic pop pieces and may have had approximately 1/2 cup of freshly ground goodness before I was through. Obviously too much, but I was feeling stressed and it was soooooooooo delicious.

Post-shop, Erin and I made the quick drive from the store to my apartment so I could at least drop everything off. Once at my apartment, however, roommate Brigitte saved the day– first with an offer to let me use her camera and second with the genius idea to transfer the memory chip from my camera into hers (which seems like an obvious enough solution, but I had been thinking I’d have to wait to get my battery to get all of my pictures back!). Erin, as if she hadn’t been generous enough already, promised to overnight ship the battery and charger back to me on Monday. So all is not lost :-).

I had a successful shop at Fairway (where it is impossible to have an unsuccessful shop). I got a gallon of skim (for yogurt), 5 bananas, 3 lbs Fuji apples, a big bag o’ oranges, Medjool dates in honor of my BSI choice, a baby butternut squash, and tons of grains from Fairway’s bulk bins — steel-cut oats, quinoa, millet, yellow corn grits, and raw wheat germ:

img_2789

Total cost: $27. Gooooooooooooooooooooo Fairway!!!

I’ll be back later with dinner. In the meantime …

** SUBMIT YOUR BSI entries!! Deadline is end-of-day Sunday (aka TOMORROW), and I will announce a winner Monday evening. Check here for more details. I’m so excited to see what you all come up with that I bought that container of dates at Fairway so I can try some of the recipes next week :-). **

Ding ding ding ding!

(That’s the sound of the food jackpot bell ringing.)

*** Hurry up and submit your BSI: Dates entries! The contest is open to everyone, even if you don’t have a blog. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, check here for more information and a running list of submissions. Please help by spreading the word on your blogs!!***

And welcome to all of my new readers! This is my first time at the computer since I left this morning, so it might take me a couple days to get to everyone’s comments. It’s past my bedtime!

I’ve been on a free food roll this week, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Excellent news for the budget, but I don’t know how long I can keep up this pace — I feel like I’ve only had about 30 waking seconds in my apartment all week. I’m going to work on zooming through today’s food recap. It’s a long one!

I left class on the Upper East Side at 1 to head to a doctor’s appointment in Bay Ridge for 3 (basically opposite ends of the earth, if you’re not familiar with NY). Since I was going to be switching trains at Union Square anyway, I decided to turn my oatmeal-for-$1 coupon into lunch at the Jamba Juice there. With tax, the oatmeal actually came to $1.08, but since I found $1.50 on the ground in a subway station yesterday (I know!! Who drops $1.50 in quarters and dimes and leaves it???), I’m considering it free. I got the banana oatmeal with brown sugar crumble:

img_2643img_2644Needing a place to sit and eat, I strategically maneuvered myself (and my oatmeal) over to the Whole Foods next door where I knew side-dish-potential would be high. And oh my goodness, did I hit the jackpot!! I sneakily collected samples in a container meant for the fresh-ground almond butter and then parked myself in the cafe upstairs to enjoy my complete and balanced meal. Clockwise from top left: maple ham, veal scallopini, grapefruit slices, orange slices, ginger snap pieces, lemon snap hearts:

img_2648

And the real winner: drinking chocolate!

img_2647

img_2641

Because I like to live on the wild side, I retrieved the peanut butter from my stash of what-if-I-can’t-find-free-food backup snacks (carrots, apples, pb, and raisins).

Can you guess what I did??? Banana brown sugar oatmeal + pb + drinking chocolate:

img_2656

Yum yum yum yum yum yum.

On my way out of WF, I discovered that two new samples had surfaced. I didn’t want them to feel left out, so I got one of each. Pumpkin-seed black bean burger and buffalo chicken with blue cheese:

img_2657

I hopped back on the subway to continue the odyssey to Bay Ridge. At the doc’s office, I had a blue raspberry mini candy cane from the receptionist’s desk to mask my buffalo-breath:

img_2659

After the doc, I headed back into the city (eating my carrots and apples on the way) to meet my friend Rami for tea at Grey Dog in the village. Rami and I became friends in an NYU elevator in September 2001 when I discovered he was studying abroad here from Australia … where I was planning to study the next semester! Here we are dancing at his wedding this past summer (he’s second from left):

boys

And here’s Rami’s grilled chicken press:

img_2663

And my Earl Grey with skim and 1/2 pack of sugar in the raw:

img_2661

If you know any baby boomers in need of boomer-related services, Rami can help at Boomerater.com :-). And, a special shout out to Rami’s wife Ali who also reads the blog. Hi Ali!

When Rami and I finished catching up, I met Gina and Kate a few blocks away for yet another NYU Alumni event: a workshop on age-defying fitness by Marilyn Moffat. In the interest of time, I’m going to skip a review of the talk’s content and just cut right to the food. My plate included broccoli, grape tomatoes, red and yellow pepers, cauliflower, carrots, pineapple, strawberries, grapes, blueberries, cantaloupe, almonds, triangle of swiss cheese, 3 cubes of cheddar, goat cheese crusted with freshly ground black pepper, and raisin walnut bread:

plate #1

The goat cheese and the raisin walnut bread were definitely the stars:

img_2677img_2674

So I spread one on top of the other, added the final backup snack of raisins, and had three more slices:

img_2683

Plus plate #2 (bread pictured is part of the 4 slices total):

img_2680

I ate several more handfuls of unpictured produce plus this cookie that made me miss fall:

img_2689

And since I’m always thinking of the future, here’s what I brought home:

goat cheese, cheese chunks, almonds, bread (now in the freezer), carrots/peppers/cauliflower for work snacks tomorrow, and zucchini for cooking

goat cheese, cheese chunks, almonds, bread (now in the freezer), carrots/peppers/cauliflower for work snacks tomorrow, and zucchini for cooking

So like I said, it’s been a long and busy day — academically, socially, gastronomically, transportationally, etc. — but I’m no poorer than I was yesterday!!

I’m not sure if I’ll be able to post tomorrow since I’m going straight up to Yonkers after work to visit Erin Gunn (one of my oldest friends from home and my other half-marathon-training partner) for bowling, karaoke, and a Saturday morning 5-mile run. I’ll be back with a full report later on Saturday, along with a special announcement about the prizes I have selected for the BSI contest. The submissions list is growing, so get your entries in ASAP!

Geographical stress

Yay groceries! Here’s what I got this afternoon:

kale, broccoli, apples, unsweetened coconut, raisins, oranges, pumpkin, carrots, part-skim ricotta, strawberries

kale, broccoli, apples, unsweetened coconut, raisins, oranges, pumpkin, carrots, part-skim ricotta, strawberries

Total cost: $23!! That brings the week’s grocery total up to $35, leaving me with $5 of wiggle room for the rest of the week :-).

I stopped into the gourmet market by my apartment on the way home to pretend to shop so that I could get samples of cheese, Portuguese sweet bread, and toast dipped in fancy olive oil. We all know how much I love my free food!

While almost getting into several fistfights trying to maneuver my way through the grocery crowd shopping, I was on the phone complaining to my mom about NY living. I want three things that are impossible here: (1) my own apartment, (2) a car to drive to places like, say, the grocery store, and (3) grocery store aisles wider (just slightly, that’s all I ask) than my hips. I’ve been here for 8 1/2 years, and I’ve had enough!! Except that I have 1 1/2 years left of grad school …

I got home and went to town preparing lunch for the week (details to come tomorrow) and dinner for tonight. I had a teeny bit of Belkis’ beans left in the fridge (I froze the other half), so I mixed them with 1/2 cup pumpkin and 1/3 cup guacamole to increase the volume to my liking:

img_2466
With butternut squash seeds, grated homemade cheddar, sea salt, freshly ground black pepper, and a dollop of yogurt:

img_2469

Macro love:

img_2471

For dessert, I had 1/4 cup cream cheese frosting (greek yog, part-skim ricotta, vanilla, maple cream, cinnamon, raisins, unsweetened coconut) with a few strawberries for dipping:

img_2479

And now it’s just about bedtime! I have a long day planned for tomorrow (5am gym + work + 1st class (blech) + commute home until 9pm), so I’m trying out some earplugs because this is Brooklyn, walls are thin, and most people over the age of six are still awake now. Maybe I will get some good sleep!

What do you wish you could change about where you live?
