Dinner in phases

My meal schedule tends to evolve based on when and where I come into contact with food! While walking home from the subway station yesterday afternoon around 3:30, for example, I stopped into Union Market (purely for the samples, of course) and came upon dinner part 1, which I brought home and arranged prettily on a plate with decaf soymilky sweet coconut thai chai:

img_4713

Findings included the sampler cup of antipasti, cheddar chunks on baby toast squares (I actually had 3 of these), and 3 cookies:

img_4715

The cookies deserve a closer look:

img_4716

Sandwich cookies are my favorite!

I also had a package waiting for me when I got home. (Is there anything as satisfying as interesting mail?) It was the Country Bob’s sauce I won from Allison at Green Dog Wine:

img_4721

I have big plans for this sauce and a block of tofu. Just wait!

Dinner part 2 was 3/4 cup of the delicious soup that my coworker Nitza made for me along with my last 3 slices of kale-crust pizza (:-( so sad to see it go):

img_4724

Hearty chunks of health:

img_4727

Kale-crust pizza, I hope we meet again soon:

img_4732

Dinner part 3 happened a couple hours later and was inspired by Heather who was inspired by Sarah to make peanut butter frozen yogurt. I followed Sarah’s procedure with 1/2 cup yogurt, 1 tsp peanut butter, and a drop of vanilla. But I couldn’t stop, so I also mixed in 1/3 mashed banana, 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder, and sprinkle of cinnamon and cardamom. I froze it for 20 minutes, stirred, and froze it for 20 more. Voila!

img_4734

I considered sprinkling chocolate pieces over the top but decided against it in light of my cookie spree earlier in the afternoon. I had more fruit salad (also with cinnamon and cardamom) on the side instead:

img_4737

Perfect way to end the night!

Also, congrats to Lindsay at For the Love of Oats on her one-year blogiversary!! To celebrate, she has some pretty exciting (and lucrative!) contests lined up, so go check it out!

I’ll be back after work with today’s food … followed by a serious movement to catch up on sleep!

Do you prefer to eat all at once or in pieces?

Limbs of lead

I woke up with a growling tummy this morning. How is that possible after all I ate yesterday? Empty calories will do it every time, I suppose. I had a giant spoonful (about 1/4 cup) of fruit salad from yesterday’s produce leftovers before heading out for my run around 7.

img_4701

I kept the run short — about 2.5 miles — because my legs still feel like lead from the re-introduction of a different strength workout (scroll down to find the “Reach Your Goal 2008 Workout” video here) on Tuesday morning, and I wanted to leave enough time for a thorough stretch with yogadownload’s Gentle Hatha #1. This run was so tedious — my hamstrings just refused to warm up. And I don’t know if my HRM was acting up or if my heart was really going wild at some point along the way, but look at how high it went! Stats: 28 minutes, 212 calories, average heart rate 143, max 216. Coming back in for the yoga (and for breakfast) was a big relief.

img_4691

I heated 3/4 cup banana bread crockpot oats and added 1/2 cup yogurt, sprinkles of nutmeg and coconut, and a spoonful of peanut butter.

I had the oats with my soymilky black tea and a flower because I was trying to channel the breakfast romance that Miss Banana Cabana conjurs every morning with her breakfast arrangements:

img_4696

(But I don’t think my arrangement had quite the same effect as hers, somehow.)

I was in the mood for more of a mess, so I splattered the pb from my spoon all over the oats to shake things up:

img_4699

Speaking of crockpot oats, Abbie at Foods That Fit is working on putting together a blogger cookbook! Imagine: all the recipes that you want to try from all over the internet compiled neatly in one simple location. Check out her cookbook post (that just happens to include my recipe for crockpot oats in the sample photo :-D) for more details about how you can contribute AND get your hands on a copy for free!

I left at 10 to head up to Hunter for the day. I usually have class on Thursdays, but it was cancelled today for Common Day. Hunter does this a few times every year with lectures and workshops on a single theme (today’s theme was racism) from 11am to 7pm. Ummmm, 11am to 7pm?? The other girls in my program and I lasted until 2. Hopefully they still let us graduate .

Before leaving the apartment this morning, I threw together a bunch of random things that I hoped would get me through the afternoon. (If I’m not eating during lectures, I usually end up sleeping.) At 11, I had a snack baggie with carrots from yesterday and a tbsp of peanut butter:

img_4703

At 12, I had my last two stuffed kale leaves:

img_4704

At 12:07, I had 1/2 cup yogurt with chopped banana, chopped pear, cardamom, nutmeg, and a sprinkle of kashi golean crunch:

img_4705

At 12:16, I had another cup of fruit salad:

img_4707

I was trying to pace myself, but the minutes were passing at the speed of years, and I had nothing to distract me from my bag o’ food and minimal hunger pangs. I took a little break from eating and then had my first-ever Kraft LiveActive bar at 12:52:

img_4708img_4711

The bar was fine — it was very berry-y and chocolate-y and tasted like a candy bar — but I doubt I’d buy these again. I only got them in the first place because I had a coupon, and I’d really rather have a piece of real food than a bar any day! But, I can’t deny that bars are good in a pinch, never go bad, and have decent mouth-entertainment value … for about 49 seconds.

After the bar, I took a 15 minute nap in my chair. Until I realized the speaker was calling on a girl directly behind me and the entire auditorium had swiveled in my direction. Awesome. That woke me up for the last 10 minutes. Falling asleep was hard work and made me hungry, so I dug around for my one remaining snack:

img_4712

Like I said, we busted out of there as soon as the talk was over at 2 (no small breakout groups for us!) … and again, I hope they’ll still let us graduate! I’m now home and resting my aching hamstrings. I really do feel like I’ve been dragging solid blocks of lead around all day. Maybe that’s why I’m so tired.

Restaurant Review: Kiku

img_4667

After work last night, Gina, Kate, Kareen, and I met for our regular (ummm, does every six months count as regular still??) Brooklyn girls dinner night. Gina and Kate have made several blog cameos, but Kareen can be a bit harder to pin down!

We ate at Kiku, a sushi restaurant mere blocks away from my apartment. Yay for convenience! I’ve ordered takeout from Kiku before (back in ancient history when I still had an income), but I’ve never actually eaten inside.

Here’s Kareen modeling her edamame appetizer:

img_4672

I totally made her pose for that picture, so blame me if she looks slightly more scary than cute!

Kareen’s edamame made the rounds, and I had a couple small handfulls:

img_4675

I instantly felt the sugar haze from earlier in the day starting to recede. What a relief!

Gina ordered the hot & sour miso soup as her appetizer. I didn’t have any, but the camera couldn’t stay away:

img_46701

The restaurant was QUITE chilly, thanks to a pair of sluggishly closing doors, but we had fun nonetheless. While waiting for our main courses to arrive, we got to watch the artists at work:

img_4676

I really wanted to try some fancy sushi concoctions, but I decided to play it safe after the day of food I’d had already! I ordered seaweed salad:

img_4684

I love love love seaweed salad. It’s another one of those foods with the perfect balance of crunch and chew.

img_4685

I also ordered a tuna roll with brown rice:

img_4683

As much as I enjoy elaborate sushi rolls (especially when they involve avocado), there’s something so alluring about a simple tuna roll. It never lets me down! I ate everything (of course), including all the ginger and most of the wasabi. Sushi always reminds me of my senior year of college when I had a weekly Wednesday night sushi date. Mmmm, sushi. We don’t spend nearly enough time together these days.

Gina received a beautiful tower of spicy tuna and asparagus rolls and another kind (maybe tuna and avocado?) I can’t quite remember:

img_4677

Kate got a tuna roll and a tuna and avocado roll (I think), and Kareen got a spicy tuna roll and a spicy tuna and avocado roll (maybe?):

img_4680img_4681

Kiku does actually make sushi that does not involve tuna. Clearly, we had a prior arrangement with each other to be tuna twins (quadruplets?) last night.

And just for the sake of accuracy and all, I had to chop up a giant Hershey’s Kiss when I got home from dinner (someone brought it into the office yesterday) so I could put it in my chocolate bag in the freezer instead of eating it. I did, however, eat the crumbs (plus a piece of my blogger secret cupid lindt hazelnut chocolate that somehow managed to jump out of the chocolate bag and into the pile of crumbs):

img_4689

And that just about does it for yesterday. How do YOU feel about sushi?

The table of doom

How lucky can a girl get? :-D. I started the day with a two-hour staff meeting. During the meeting, I saw one of the therapists hovering suspiciously near my desk (because, if you recall, my desk is right near the conference room). When I got out of the meeting at 11, I found this enormous container of soup waiting for me!

picture-096

Thanks, Nitza! The soup was HUGE and chunky and full of spices and seasonings and smelled like sofrito, mmmm. It was obviously too large for me to have all at once, so I decided I should set to work making a smaller container available! Yogurt to the rescue:

picture-091

In addition to 1/2 cup of yogurt, the mix also contained chopped banana, chopped pear, nutmeg, cardamom, and a sprinkle of kashi golean crunch.

As soon as the yogurt was gone, I rinsed the container, filled it with a cup of soup, and put it in the fridge to rest for a few.

No sooner had the soup gone into the fridge than Myrna came zooming up to my desk with a dramatic whisper, “Sarah, I have CAKE.” Uh oh. (Side note: It was still only like 11:12 am at this point.) She unloaded her prize onto the infamous conference room table (again, right next to my desk). The cake was left over from a Dora-themed birthday party her daughter had gone to at Chuck-E-Cheese. Look at the cute Dora sticker on the foil wrapping!

picture-092

And colorful frosting! I cut myself 1/3 of the piece she brought in (that piece over to the right) and split the other 2/3 between Jessica and Belkis so I wouldn’t be tempted to eat it all:

picture-093

(If you can’t tell, that is pineapple filling between the layers, mmmmmmmm!)

I also licked the foil:

picture-094

It turned my lips blue and my teeth pink. Whoops.

We had another meeting at noon. My supervisor, Heather, had promoted it as “bring your own lunch, and we’ll have some extra snacks and desserts.” Uh oh again. As per her instructions, I brought my own lunch. A cup of Nitza’s chunky soup (or at least it was a cup before the container tipped over completely in the bumpy microwave and lost all of its broth):

img_4646

This soup was so hearty and delicious with those big chunks of meat and veggies. (And I had enough to bring two more cups home! Again, who’s the luckiest girl in the world?)

I also brought along the two-layer lunch I had packed. The top layer was three stuffed kale leaves:

picture-097

And the bottom layer was a chopped tomato mixed with fat free feta:

picture-098img_4644And then there was the snack spread: baby carrots, tortilla chips, red pepper strips, french onion dip, salsa, red grapes, green grapes, apples, hershey’s kisses, chewy chips ahoy cookies, etc…. My agency seems incapable of doing food in a small way (which is just fine with me :-D).

I was impressed with the selection of fresh goods, so I made myself a produce sampler platter of peppers, carrots, salsa, apple slices, and grapes. I had two small plates that looked like this (note the child-sized pretend oven I was using as a table in the background):

picture-100

I was quite satisfied after all of that (understandably), so I contented myself with 1/2 a cookie because it was right there:

picture-110

There were tons of snacks left over at the end of the meeting, so of course I swept all of the remaining produce into a plastic bag to bring home (along with half a jar of salsa):

picture-102

Back up at my desk, though, some unfortunate (or fortunate, depending on your perspective ;-)) things happened. Both of my afternoon visits rescheduled which meant I didn’t need to leave the office for the rest of the day. Good for catching up on work, but dangerous for the temptation that the conference room table often brings! Within moments, Rosalie (the one who missed her own work anniversary party with the mocha-frosted chocolate cake) made a triumphant return to the department with this “taste of heaven on earth”:

img_4651

It was an extra chocolate crumb cake that had been donated to the advocacy department downstairs. Ahhhh! And it went straight to the conference room table with me hot on its trail. There was a layer of chocolate cake on the bottom, the thickest layer of crumb topping I’ve ever encountered on top of that, and dark chocolate drizzle over the whole thing:

img_4652

I had just prepared myself a little bowl of tortilla chip crumbs (because the leftover meeting snacks ended up on the conference room table, of course), so I cut myself a piece of the cake and threw it on top of the crumbs. And then, because I live on the wild side, I mashed the cake up into the crumbs for the ultimate salty sweet experience (I also mixed in a teeny bit of peanut butter, but shhhhh, don’t tell):

picture-106picture-107

Before I ate the cake, Jessica and I cut up the rest and made sure that everyone in the office got some, regardless of interest, because I wasn’t about to sit with the rest of that thing taunting me all afternoon! Once the cake was distributed, I sat down for some quiet time with my bowl.

I can’t lie. I felt a little bit ill after all that.

I needed something salty. Good thing I had chips and dip mere inches from my mouth. I scooped up the remaining chip crumbs and the dip-covered spoon (I covered the rest of the dip and put it in the fridge because no one needs that hanging around):

picture-108

And because I just can’t win, the salt left me with a craving for these:

picture-111img_4663

And then it was time to go home! I booked it out of there fast before I could do any more damage. Though I guess I’d already kind of seen to it that there was no damage left to do …

On the way home, Pura offered me half of her tangerine. I accepted because my mouth desperately needed a taste of health!

img_4666

Thank goodness this internship coincides with my half-marathon training. I would be in BIG trouble otherwise :-D.

I’ve got a sushi dinner lined up with the Brooklyn girls tonight. I’m not particularly hungry, but I expect to find a way around that …

A lazy challenge

Ooooh, I felt so relaxed and refreshed after sleeping in until 6:30 this morning (the main benefit of going to running club at night, if you ask me, is that it removes the need for an early am workout the next day). Breakfast was a lazy affair, too.

img_4620

I heated a heaping 1/2 cup of banana bread crockpot oats from the batch I made and froze ages ago:

img_4624

With the oats, I enjoyed 1/2 cup yogurt, sprinkles of coconut and additional nutmeg, and a good old-fashioned spoonful of crunchy pb:

img_4623

Plus water and soymilky black tea on the side:

My friend Diana sent me this NYT article announcing this week as “A Week Without Shopping,” the idea being that most people will find they can easily survive for a week on the food already in their homes. I wish I had known about this challenge sooner because it’s definitely my style! What do you think? Could you survive a week with no groceries?
