‘Hood to ‘hood

Since Penno’s bachelorette festivities, a number of things have happened in my world, the most exciting of which was FINISHING THE LAST PAPER OF MY GRADUATE SCHOOL CAREER!!!!!! You may be aware that I have been in grad school forEVER. Having graduation within my grasp is epic, and having a homework stress breather has been brilliant … and just long enough to get me psyched for my social work licensing exam prep course next month (ugh).

Other things have been happening in the world of my food. Recently, Sam left his job at my agency to relocate to San Francisco.

Jose and Sam:

IMG_8961.JPG

We sent him off with a smashing smattering of nibbles, obviously!

Jessica demonstrates grapes, crudites, cheese, crackers, chips, salsa, guacamole, asparagus spears (!!!!), and more:

IMG_8969.JPG

The crowd mingled:

IMG_8970.JPG

IMG_8971.JPG

Carrot cake was present:

IMG_8972.JPG

I ate a baby wedge because I obviously can’t resist carrot cake with cream cheese icing:

IMG_8975.JPG

The crew (partially):

IMG_8976.JPG

Then, on a non-food note, I joined some of the office for the May Day immigration reform and wall street reform on a crazy sweaty and hot Saturday morning:

IMG_9026.JPG

Next up … Kate’s birthday! Kate arranged a little last minute group for all-you-can-eat taco night at Mad Dog and Beans in the financial district:

Img 9029

Lucky Kate had her 28th fall on one of the most gorgeous nights of the season (more than I can say for my cloudy dreary frigid May 11 birthday), so we got to eat outside:

Img 9030

Mad Dog and Beans is genius because they have special all-you-can-eat nights every week. Monday is for tacos, Tuesday is for burritos, and Wednesday is for fajitas. Brilliant, right? We were there on Monday, taco night! The deal was unlimited tacos (chicken, mahi mahi, and/or steak) with a frozen margarita for $20.

Sadly, I had already eaten more than my fill at work (surprise surprise), so I decided to take a non-unlimited route. That does not mean I did not taste Kate’s margarita:

IMG_9028.JPG

Or have a bite of her mahi mahi tacos!!!!!!! (omgdelicious)

IMG_9036.JPG

If I didn’t get unlimited tacos, what did I get? A side of sweet plantains, of course!!

IMG_9037.JPG

I also ordered a refreshing mojito to wash my maduros down, but it somehow escaped the wrath of the camera lens?

Here’s the birthday girl:

IMG_9042.JPG

And here’s the birthday girl’s cosmo cupcake from Crumbs:

IMG_9043.JPG

I was so excited when Kate cut the cake to share:

IMG_9047.JPG

Crumbs actually did a decent job making this cupcake cosmo-y. The inside had a strawberry-ish cream, and the frosting on top was lime. Delicious!

IMG_9048.JPG

Shortly thereafter (on another day), I walked over the Brooklyn Bridge with this stud, one of my all-time favorite activities:

IMG_9054.JPG

From there we walked to Sahadi’s, quite possibly my favorite store in Brooklyn, as they sell unsweetened chocolate disks and unsweetened and unsulfured dried papaya, dried strawberries, dried pineapple, and dried mango from bulk bins! I have no pictures because I ate it all too fast 😛

So, there it is, a whole bunch of random adventures, inside to outside, East Harlem to Brooklyn Heights. Yayyyyy for spring! Month of May, I am counting on you to be breezy and warm for your remaining 10 days!

P.S. Happy BIG birthday today to my big brother, Mark!!

Allll night long

So, post-nap on the Boston roof, Ting and I set about some record-time primping …

IMG_8783.JPG

… and then traipsed over to the hotel where the rest of the girls were staying and where the festivities were already under way!

IMG_8784.JPG

I thought I was still stuffed from brunch until I smelled this!

IMG_8785.JPG

I have never been a fan of Pizza Hut pizza, as experiences with it in the past have left me gagging. However, the Hut seems to have undergone some serious renovations — this was some of the best pizza ever! The crust was garlicky, the cheese was crispy, the sauce was tangy. Has anyone else noticed this?

IMG_8787.JPG

To accompany this pizza, we sipped champagne like the classy ladies we are:

IMG_8788.JPG

(Bride)

Ting, as the sole remaining Boston resident, had put together a schedule of activities for the evening. We reviewed our agenda with the other girls:

IMG_8789.JPG

Scavenger hunt for the bachelorette:

IMG_8790.JPG

Once the schedule met with approval, we slid into our matching rhinestone bridesmaid tanks (yes, we were those girls)

IMG_8792.JPG

… and moved outside for transportation assistance:

IMG_8794.JPG

The first man we met was the taxi dispatcher in front of the hotel, and Penno immediately consulted her scavenger hunt agenda to see how he could help (aside from hooking us up with a taxi van):

IMG_8797.JPG

He was too shy to bite a candy from her necklace …

IMG_8803.JPG

… but our cab driver, Muhammad, was not!

IMG_8804.JPG

He was a wonderful sport, and we could not thank him enough for getting the ball rolling!

IMG_8805.JPG

Our first stop was Jaque’s Cabaret, apparently the #1 destination for Bachelorette Parties in Boston:

IMG_8806.JPG

We took our seats at the bar and waited for the magic to begin:

IMG_8814.JPG

IMG_8818.JPG

One of the first items on the list required the bachelorette to obtain the label from a man’s underwear. Lo and behold, a real, live gentleman walked through the drag queen bar and offered up his label! Scissors were procured from the bartender …

IMG_8821.JPG

… and label retrieval ensued!

IMG_8822.JPG

This is the, Yay for growing up in North Attleboro! picture:

IMG_8832.JPG

The ladies performing on stage for the evening were incredible and had us all on our feet:

IMG_8870.JPG

Penno worked her dollar bills for some lap dance magic:

IMG_8873.JPG

IMG_8890.JPG

Once the show ended, we made our way into the street and stopped in a hotel piano bar for a moment to collect our thoughts. This dude made us all cherry pineapple shots and then charged us like a million dollars for them after the fact:

IMG_8903.JPG

We left that bar and had the dispatcher of that hotel call us another taxi van … which happened to be driven by our favorite driver Muhammad. The girls vogued while we screeched through the city toward our next destination …

IMG_8912.JPG

The Greatest Bar!

Helloooooooo, Boston! Who knew you were so full of men???!!!

IMG_8913.JPGIMG_8914.JPG

The spot was rife with facilitators for Penno’s scavenger hunt!

IMG_8915.JPGIMG_8917.JPG

More men, men, and men!

IMG_8921.JPGIMG_8922.JPG

The biggest scavenger hunt accomplishment of the night, in my opinion, was convincing this incredibly sober guy that it was a brilliant idea for him to remove his boxers and gift them to the bride-to-be!

IMG_8930.JPG

And how could we forget the famous piggy-back ride?

IMG_8936.JPG

All in all, it was a mindblowingly successful night that left Ting and me in a late night pizzeria with styrofoam cups of water …

IMG_8952.JPG

… and delicious pizza that may have been destined to not stay in our stomachs entirely forever:

IMG_8953.JPG

The next morning, recovery was in order, so Ting and I went out for brunch to an adorable book store on Newbury Street. Coffee and water:

IMG_8955.JPG

Juevos rancheros my way: hard-poached eggs, mashed avocado, refried beans, and salsa over tortillas with maduros (fried sweet plantains) on the side:

IMG_8957.JPG

Perhaps the most delicious meal of my life!

After brunch, we went to a cafe with wi-fi so we could make progress on our various homeworks. The display case had a lemon ginger scone — with real chunks of lemon and ginger — so I got one to split with Ting:

IMG_8959.JPG

Post-scone, I engaged in some T-action and got myself to the bus station to catch my Bolt back to NYC and some semblance of a healthy lifestyle.

Penno, I’m so happy to be one of your bridesmaids, and I can’t wait until the big day!

All for the vows

Well, the whirlwind never ends around here! The past couple weeks month has been crazy. At the end of April, I headed up to Massachusetts for Kerri Penno’s bridal shower and bachelorette party. ‘Tis the season!

The bridesmaids (including me!) put on the bridal shower at Luciano’s, a swanky Italian restaurant and event spot near where I grew up. As we mingled, the beautiful smell of baking bread began to waft through the room until these stunners arrived …

Tomato-garlic-herb focaccia:

IMG_8730.JPG

Warm gooey cinnamon buns:

IMG_8731.JPG

Is it breakfast or lunch? You decide!

We started with salads …

IMG_8737.JPG

And then chat-chat-chatted until the buffet began to grow and grow and grow:

IMG_8740.JPG

And grow!

IMG_8741.JPG

The bride began the food line:

IMG_8742.JPG

And her loyal servants followed closely behind 😀

IMG_8743.JPG

Brunch was a delicious medly of fruit, eggs, sausage, pasta, saucy seafood (including crab and lobster!), and chicken:

IMG_8744.JPG

After eating, Ting and I got a little wild with the cinnamoon buns (and whatever mamosa-ish drink it was that kept coming around) and started dunking the sugary bits in our coffee:

IMG_8749.JPG

Heaven.

After brunch, we looked at the shower cake:

Img 8724

And at the impressive rolled chocolate floral arrangement on top of it:

IMG_8752.JPG

We looked, but we did not touch … because it was time for presents! And presents and presents and presents:

IMG_8755.JPG

And then, finally, the cake was mine for the taking, mmmmmmmmmm 😀

IMG_8758.JPG

After the shower, Ting and I drove back to Boston to have our own little pre-bachelorette party at her apartment while we “got ready” for the main event that night. We toasted nearly empty red wine glasses and had to fill them up again immediately:

IMG_8760.JPG

(Pretty apartment.)

IMG_8761.JPG

And then, full wine glasses in hand, we made our way up, up, up …

IMG_8763.JPG

… until we were floating in the sky!

IMG_8766.JPG

(or maybe just on the roof)

IMG_8768.JPG

IMG_8769.JPG

Wine in reach, obv:

IMG_8770.JPG

Having grown up so close to Boston, I tend to take it for granted, but it really is such a pretty city!

IMG_8771.JPG

Cheers!

IMG_8772.JPG

And naptime …

IMG_8775.JPG

IMG_8776.JPG

Thank goodness for those peaceful five minutes. We had quite the wild night lurking just moments away!

Bachelorette party to come …

Are your springs/summers full of nonstop wedding festivities?

Another loss, another cake

My office recently celebrated the retirement of Lorraine after 18 years working in the early childhood department of the agency. It was a bittersweet affair because we will miss her tremendously (and already do!). For the occasion, the “decorating committee” transformed the baby gym into a swanky lounge!

IMG_8613.JPG

I was in charge of the chocolate fountain, of course! Please admire my handiwork 😛

IMG_8615.JPG

The spread of hors d’oeuvres was staggering.

IMG_8618.JPG

The table kept growing …

IMG_8621.JPG

… and growing …

IMG_8622.JPG

… and growing!

IMG_8623.JPG

Ta-da!

IMG_8625.JPG

Finally, the guest of honor made her appearance amidst much hugging …

IMG_8627.JPG

… and greeting …

IMG_8631.JPG

… and schmoozing …

IMG_8634.JPG

… and laughter …

IMG_8636.JPG

… and general fanfare!

IMG_8638.JPG

Here’s my plate with veggies, pico de gallo, guacamole, fresh herbed mozzarella on parmesan toast, sushi rolls, and bean dip:

IMG_8639.JPG

Just imagine the guacamole times about 30, and that’s probably how much I ate!

IMG_8640.JPG

The crowd went crazy!

IMG_8642.JPG

IMG_8643.JPG

My favorite kind of assembly line:

IMG_8644.JPG

Belkis demonstrated proper chocolate fountain procedure:

IMG_8646.JPG

IMG_8647.JPG

IMG_8649.JPG

Sam just posed:

IMG_8650.JPG

I ate:

IMG_8651.JPG

Deborah and I found Lucia’s sangria!

IMG_8660.JPG

The crowd gathered for Lorraine’s speech …

IMG_8662.JPG

IMG_8664.JPG

… while I embarked on super critical cake-cutting duty!

IMG_8666.JPGIMG_8665.JPG

Lorraine, we will miss you … and thanks for giving us yet another marvelous opportunity to celebrate in style!

Town and country

So, we left off in early April … which leads perfectly into Easter! Normally, I would have gone up to MA for a Passover-Easter combo of events, but between school and other travel plans, I couldn’t make it work. Enter Plan B: traditional Easter celebrating with Erik! We headed up to Harlem for the Easter Sunday service:

IMG_8547.JPG

Probably my first full-length church service ever (except for some weddings perhaps?). I was mostly fascinated by the exposed brick and stained glass!

IMG_8553.JPG

And the cupcake tower downstairs that accompanied Easter brunch:

IMG_8556.JPG

While waiting for the ready signal on the food, we took a tour of the garden:

IMG_8559.JPG

We got back inside just in time for locally baked red velvet cupcakes, aka the appetizer!!

IMG_8561.JPG

Pretty eggs:

IMG_8562.JPG

Here’s cupcake #1:

IMG_8565.JPG

Cupcake #2:

IMG_8566.JPG

Inside:

IMG_8567.JPGIMG_8568.JPG

Cupcake #3:

IMG_8569.JPG

I could not keep my hands off the cupcakes!! Luckily, I had a very willing partner who helped me eat half of each 😀

A quarter-dozen cupcakes in, the brunch was finally ready. I loaded up with a crispy corner of mac & cheese, collard greens, and BBQ chicken:

IMG_8573.JPG

And then it was time for Easter dinner! You didn’t think I would stop at brunch, did you?

Erik and I headed out to his aunt and uncle’s house in Staten Island, where we received a welcome tour of the garden, complete with chives and oregano that had just started to sprout:

IMG_8574.JPG

IMG_8575.JPG

Space like this in NYC always blows my mind. Everything was so peaceful:

IMG_8576.JPG

We hung out on the patio with Prosecco and cute boys:

IMG_8577.JPG

And cheese and crackers!

IMG_8581.JPG

Erik’s Aunt Lois is a master entertainer and seasonal decorator, as you can see from the dining room arrangement:

IMG_8584.JPG

IMG_8585.JPG

We started with a delicious asparagus, fennel, and orange salad:

IMG_8586.JPG

Between courses, I nibbled on the Easter candy basket that was screaming my name:

IMG_8587.JPG

More centerpiece action:

IMG_8588.JPG

Dinner was scalloped potatoes (I took a couple crispy mini-pieces since we all know I’m not a potato girl), ham with pineapple and cranberries, and green spring veggies:

IMG_8589.JPG

This ham was amazing. The pineapple and cherries had gotten caramelized in the oven — it was like eating candy!

IMG_8590.JPG

When dessert arrived, my jaw dropped to the floor.

IMG_8591.JPG

We had rhubarb cake and a lemon cheesecake-ish pie:

IMG_8592.JPG

Both beyond delicious and refreshing, especially the lemon pie!

Img 8594

Mmmmmmmmm, perfect day. I feel so lucky to have been invited! I love visiting people’s real houses, especially in this city where they are so few and far between.

Which would you choose: city apartment or suburban house?
