Today’s winnings:

7 banana nut odwalla bars, 17.6 oz Fage 0%, 6 caramel nut brownie mini-luna bars, 1 banana, 32 oz homemade Dominican beans (habichuelas?), leftovers from lunch (rice, tamale de pollo, chicken, baked ziti)

Total cost: $0!! How is that possible? Let’s start at the beginning …

I got up at 5 again this morning for the gym. I debated skipping it and going back to bed, but I knew that today would be full of dangerous unlimited food situations — and I have a tendency to go into survival mode in those situations and eat like I will never see food again. Sooo, to the gym I went. For time’s sake, I skipped the weights and just did the jog there and back, 30 minutes StairMaster, and stretching/abs. Stats: 59 minutes, 390 calories, 134 average heart rate.

After the gym, I had a milky mug of nutcracker sweet tea and zoomed up to East Harlem for the parents’ group. Most of the families who use the services at my agency are Mexican immigrants, so the home visitors often organize groups for the parents to help alleviate their social isolation. This Thursday morning relaxation group is one of the most popular, so I wanted to take advantage of my last class-free Thursday today (classes start next week) and finally go see what it was all about! The parents arrived, and we all chatted over breakfast. I was expecting a typical spread of muffins, bagels, danishes, etc. But we had pancakes, Trader Joe’s nonfat French vanilla yogurt, canned peaches, and scrambled eggs with onions, peppers, and cheese!

Plus more nibbling. In total, I probably had about three of these:

img_2156

One cup of this:

img_21541

And 2/3 cup of this:

img_2155

I don’t like coffee, but it was fuhr-eeeeeeeeeezing in there, so I held/gulped nearly a full cup of it:

img_2160

I started getting ready to leave a little before noon so that I could make my lunch engagement, and on my way out, my coworker Inginia gave me the unopened Fage to take home!!! Inginia also had me try some of this amazing dish she made from a Lebanese friend’s recipe … which she hopefully remembers to bring in for me tomorrow because it was delicious. It had wheatberries, garbanzo beans, and spinach:

img_2161

So, after stuffing my face for nearly three hours with all of this scrumptiousness, I hightailed it back over to the agency for our potluck lunch in honor of a coworker who is transitioning to a different department. We had Belkis’ homemade Dominican beans, Midred’s homemade baked ziti, tamales de pollo, Dominican rice, and chicken:

img_2168

Because I love my camera’s macro setting, you get to look at the chicken inside the tamale:

img_2171

And the cheese on the ziti:

img_2172

And the calabaza in the beans:

img_2177

Somewhere in here, Belkis revealed that she had made a second container of the beans (see display of “winnings” above) just for me because she knew how excited I was about them! Don’t I have amazing coworkers? She also gave me the banana!

And then the salad arrived, so I had a second plate with more tamale, beans, and a mountain of green:

img_2182

I was pretty stuffed at this point, but the baked ziti was smack in front of me and I kept pulling off the crunchy pieces from the top as we chatted because it doesn’t count if it never touched my plate ;-). And then it was time for dessert! We had an oreo cake:

Rosa (the honoree) and Beryl (the cake-cutter)

My piece(s):

img_2184

I ate some more:

img_2186

Plus one of Heather’s peanut butter pumpkin blondies that I made for the event:

img_2189

I had to run out for a visit at 1:30, and when I got back an hour later, there were only two blondies left! (I had cut them into teeny pieces so there were initially about 25.) I had one with a mug of sugar cookie sleigh ride tea:

img_2196

And then I, um, ate the last one, you know, because it was lonely …

img_2195

While I was gone, the leftover ziti had miraculously moved to the end of the conference room table so that it was right next to my desk. I continued pulling off noodles throughout the afternoon. (Was I hungry? Of course not.) And after each noodle (or four), I ate a mint candy from Belkis’ candy jar to communicate to my mouth that lunch was over. Six (or maybe more) times. I finally wrapped up a bowl of leftovers (again, refer to “winnings” picture) to bring home.

At 3:00, the all-staff meeting began, and that’s where I grabbed the 7 Odwalla bars (meant for snacking during the meeting) with the help of Mildred, who knows how to look out for the penniless intern :-). I also may or may not have inhaled a handful of mini pretzels.

Needless to say, the running club was a must tonight. Kate and I boldly did a whole four miles (but only because the options were 4, 5, or 6). Stats, including a 6-minute warm-up: 44 minutes, 374 calories, 152 average heart rate. And the mini Lunas were waiting for us when we got back to Niketown!

I’m still full nearly 12 hours after lunch. I did not overdo it to the fullest extent of my expansion abilities, thank goodness, but I certainly ate more than necessary. And now I need to go collapse into bed because eating is hard work and I am drained!

First-ever T.O.E. guest post: Meet Gina

Don’t you love that the acronym for my blog is “TOE”? I know I do.

Anyway, since both breakfast and lunch today were exactly the same as breakfast and lunch yesterday, I thought it would be a good time to bring in a guest post!

Gina and I have embarked on many food adventures together since we met in college. You’ve actually already met Gina, too, most recently at this dinner. Over the weekend, Gina emailed to present me with the first official TOE-inspired meal along with a real, live tale of expansion from the frontlines, yay! Here’s what Gina had to say:

Your pancake breakfast inspired me! Chris made pancakes Sunday (not from scratch but from Aunt Jemima mix, so I’m sure not as healthy) and I added some strawberries from the frozen Dole ones I bought at Fairway AND I made peanut butter sauce! I did not have any yogurt so I mixed peanut butter and milk and heated it up a bit in the microwave to thicken it. Here it is!

Gina’s Tale of Expansion: Caruso’s Ristorante Italiano

These pictures (which did not come out very well because I did not set the camera properly and the lighting was bad, so most of them are blurry and dark) are from Caruso’s Ristorante Italiano in Warminster, PA. My grandparents are regulars at this restaurant, and we’ve had other family parties there before. It’s a pretty typical Italian place, and I believe the people who own it are Sicilian because all the pictures on the wall are from Sicily. Everything on the menu sounds so good and my grandfather told us to order whatever we wanted. There was no set menu. The restaurant is BYOB so we brought our own wine, although we are not big drinkers (we’re much bigger eaters!!!). We had 3 tables, a total of 22 people.

My grandfather had pre-ordered appetizers for the tables. I forgot to take pictures of those, but they were these HUGE plates of mussels, baked clams, calamari and (randomly) broccoli. Plus, he also ordered a couple orders of chicken fingers with fries and mozzerella sticks for the “kids.” Remember, these were just the appetizers! I was not at the kids’ table, but I had 2 mozzerella sticks, a TON of mussels, 2 baked clams, some calamari and some broccoli, which was quite good because the sauce was all garlic and tomatos. YUM!

I had ordered a cup of crab chowder because my grandfather was telling us how good it was, so that came next. The soup was good and thankfully it was a pretty small cup. Then, I also had a side salad before my entree came out because the meal came with a salad! Needless to say, I was already full before my entree even arrived.

The first picture is of my meal, Veal Oscar: veal with crabmeat and asparagus in a white wine sauce over pasta:

veal

So yummy. I thankfully restrained myself from eating it all and took about half home. I think almost everyone had to take some of their food home because the entrees were VERY generous and we had already eaten all that food before the main courses.

The next picture is a very blurry shot of angel hair pasta with crabmeat and shrimp in a marinara sauce:

angel-hair

This is a special that’s not on the menu but that they prepare for my grandfather every time he goes to the restaurant. I told you he’s a regular! As you can tell, my family quite enjoys seafood!

Then I took pics of the desserts because they were pretty.

my grandmom's spumoni (ice cream with raspberry and chocolate sauce)-

I was SO full after this meal! I should have taken a picture of my expanded stomach because it was certainly VERY expanded. I don’t know how I managed to eat that dessert — it was just such an overabundance of food! This is a typical family party for my Italian side of the family though. Even when we cook at someone’s house, there’s always way too much food and way too much dessert, in addition to way too many appetizers so that I’m already full by the time we eat dinner. Such is life in an Italian family!

Thanks for contributing, Gina! If anyone else out there has a tale of expansion to share, let me know in a comment and I’ll email you back!

Produce to the rescue (as usual)

As planned, I went to an NYU Alumni talk about women’s health last night. The woman who led the talk, Professor Lisa Sasson, has been quoted as a nutrition expert several times in various wellness magazines (like Self) and other publications. The information she gave was nothing new (I suppose the truth about health — that a healthy lifestyle involves balanced nutrition and regular exercise — never changes). Some interesting points/useful reminders from the talk:

– The diseases of this century — heart disease, diabetes, etc. — are diseases that stem from lifestyle (i.e. inactivity, more processed food, less fresh food).

– Sleep is not a luxury; sleep is a necessity.

– Exercising now is like putting money in the bank since we lose muscle mass and bone mass as we age: “You want to have as much money as possible in the bank so that when you retire, you still have enough.”

– Fruits and vegetables are full of chemical compounds that protect them in nature, and they protect us when we eat them as well. Different colors signify different varieties of these phyto-chemicals, so you should eat a rainbow!

– Up until our 3rd decade, we’re still storing bone that will serve us as we age, so now is the time to load up on bone-strengthening foods (in their natural forms as much as possible).

Where your excess weight is located is more important than how much you have. The lower you carry your weight (hips — for most women — and below), the less at risk you are for disease

– We should all celebrate and love food. It’s important to keep portions reasonable, but you should never completely cut out the things you love to eat.

Very appropriately, the event was stocked with lots of fruits and veggies. I had cauliflower, broccoli, red and yellow peppers, carrots, grape tomatoes:

img_1451

Strawberries, pineapple, cantaloupe, grapes:

Cheese:

img_1452

There was a ton of food left at the end, so I filled a second plate that I transferred into my empty lunch tupperwares to bring home for later use. I tried to do it smoothly, but all the lids kept falling out of my lap. So much for stealth. There was still quite a bit left after that, so I checked with one of the ladies running the event to make sure it wasn’t going into the trash (because it often does!). She assured me that they had ziplock baggies hidden under the table and would be enjoying the leftovers for snacks today. Phew! Here’s what I brought home:

img_1468

There were also lots of cookies and crackers at the talk, but I wasn’t really interested somehow! Maybe because I had already snacked on this Cadbury finger before leaving work:

img_1445

And was dreaming about having this Dark Chocolate Pomegranate VitaTop with peanut butter when I got home:

img_1473

Another busy busy busy day today! And freeeeeeeeezing cold. This clever guy at the gym this morning said to me, “Your nose matches your hair today.” Awesome.

I’ll be back eventually to report on how last night’s free food is getting me through the day today!

Snowbound

As predicted, the snow started falling this morning, grrrrrrrr. I did not go for my run and instead rushed out to do some Saturday errands (along with the rest of Brooklyn) before it got too messy. I grabbed a kitchen sink mini muffin as I left:

img_1221

The grocery store was out of control with everyone stocking up on milk and water before the big storm (eye roll), but I survived. I had to get a lot of food because I hadn’t shopped in three weeks, and I ended up only spending $30 (my self-imposed weekly food budget is $40). My purchases included: 3 lbs. McIntosh apples, pint strawberries, pint grape tomatoes, dozen eggs, crunchy natural peanut butter, yogurt for yogurt-making tonight, 28 oz. canned pumpkin, 4 navel oranges, cantaloupe, cabbage, carrots, old-fashioned oats, 2 bags fresh cranberries, nutmeg, and ginger:

img_1227

I immediately peeled and chopped the carrots into matchsticks for snacking next week, chopped the cantaloupe into chunks, and cut the green heads off the strawberries. Food is less likely to go bad when it is ready to eat at a moment’s notice :-). During all of this, I snacked on some cantaloupe shavings:

img_1230

I wanted something hot for lunch, so I arranged a bowl of leftovers from last night and reheated it in the oven at 400 for 20 minutes. Wilted salad greens topped with collard greens, baked chicken, and okra gumbo with shrimp:

img_1248

Dessert was half the container of yogurt I just bought (I only need to use half to make a new yogurt batch tonight). Ronnybrook Coconut Creamline yogurt with a chopped strawberry and nutmeg:

img_1249

OK, I’m off to start the process and take care of some other weekend things …

Restaurant Review: Creole (and a holiday party)

My work holiday party last night was full of dancing and eating: two very complementary activities. If you think I could not possibly have been hungry after eating all of my packed lunch and snacks, my coworker’s corn chowder, and half a fruitcake, you’d be wrong! The party was at Creole, a restaurant in East Harlem. I was excited when I found out because any party at a restaurant is bound to feature food! Before the dinner buffet began, servers came around with trays of salmon croquettes and vegetarian black bean meatloaf:

img_1166

I had two of each. The salmon croquettes were delicious — warm and crispy on the outside. The black bean loaf looked and felt exactly like a brownie. I was understandably disappointed when it did not taste like a brownie. In fact, the loaf tasted like a lot of nothing at first, except for a spicy burning that hit after the fact, so I only ate half a piece. But after dinner, the other half was still sitting there in front of me, and it jumped into my mouth. It tasted much better completely cold, so I had another.

The dinner was a buffet of all sorts of things. First, I covered my plate in a mountain of salad (mixed greens, shredded carrot, onions, tomatoes) and then topped it with a taste (ok, more than a taste) of everything that looked good. Clockwise from top left: baked chicken breast, collard greens, vegetarian jambalaya rice, and okra gumbo with shrimp (good thing I had so much practice with okra this week):

img_1180

The chicken was moist, the greens were sweet, the rice was sticky and seasoning-packed, and the gumbo was a perfect blend of textures and flavors. In fact, aside from an overly, um, aggressive server during the dancing portion of the night and the restaurant’s policy of no to-go containers during a buffet (like I let that stop me ;-)), the experience was quite pleasant. If I had an income, I’d eat here again.

Between dinner and dessert (wait till you see the dessert!) was dancing. Some artistic action shots:

img_1189

img_1192

img_1186

I love the colors in these photos. The restaurant had such a warm ambience.

So, with dinner (and fruitcake) successfully burned off (HA!), it was time for dessert: sweet potato beignets! They were warm and drizzled with chocolate sauce:

img_1183

And just look at this gooey sweet potato interior:

img_1185

I had two (whoops). But they were sooooo good. I wonder if I can figure out a healthy way to make them at home.

Anyway, I feel perfectly satisfied and not at all overstuffed. After events like this, people usually start offering me seats on the subway because they think I’m pregnant, but not last night! It probably helped that I only ate one plate of food … while there. I filled two more plates, but they went right into my empty lunch tupperwares and a plastic bag to bring home. A girl’s gotta do what a girl’s gotta do, and this girl is a student with no tolerance for starving!

My loot, getting ready for the fridge at home:

salad, chicken, shrimp gumbo, collard greens, and salt water peppermint taffee!

Solo performances:

salad leaves (don't they look crazy from this angle?)

collard greens, chicken, shrimp gumbo

salt water taffee!!! (party favor)

salt water taffy!!! (party favor)

I had four pieces of taffy on the looong commute home (whoops again).

I know this is the post that never ends, but I have one more thing to report. This was waiting for me when I got home:

img_1217

It’s my Polar F6 heart rate monitor, a Christmas present from my stepdad’s family. Yayyyy, I can’t wait to try it! I was planning a 5-mile run today, but it may end up having to be Sunday if we get the predicted eight inches of snow. Grrrrr, winter is messing up my half marathon training plans …
