Ethically sound

Yes, today was a day of ETHICS. My class had a guest speaker (aka the professor did not want to come in) to talk about ethics in social work for two hours, and then I had to go to a mandatory workshop for another two hours that also happened to be about social work ethics. I love when my days are so scintillating and jam-packed with variety. Ummmmm …

Anyway, I had a cup of green grapes during class at 11:30 to hold me over until lunch at 1:00 (the workshop didn’t start until 2:00). The girls and I (there are only five of us in this grad program) ate together and bemoaned the loss of our afternoon. In addition to my cup of coconut-ginger soup, I helped Emily finish the last 1/2 cup of her Hale and Hearty chicken barley soup:

Today’s yogurt had 2/3 cup yogurt, 2 tbsp pumpkin, 1/2 chopped apple, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cardamom, and a sprinkle of golean crunch:

img_42211

I had dessert during the workshop: an orange, a Starburst from Lisa, and some m&ms from Emily:

img_4259img_4260

And then I ate this honey graham zbar from Tina’s Carrots ‘N’ Cake Valentine’s day prize package (Thanks, Tina! You sent so much that I think I’ll be thanking you every day for the rest of the year :-D):

img_4253img_4254

I ate the bar because I was a little bit hungry but mostly because I was bored. And then Emily couldn’t finish her m&ms, so I helped. Because I’m in a helping profession, and it was the ethical thing to do:

img_4261

We got out of the workshop a little bit early around 3:45, and I stopped at Union Square on the way down to Brooklyn so that I could get dinner part 1: oatmeal for $1 at Jamba Juice. I decided I’d had enough sugar for the moment, so I got the banana oatmeal with no brown sugar crumbles:

img_4263

I considered waiting until I got home to eat the oatmeal, but it was cold and windy out and the oatmeal was hot. In other words, I inhaled the whole cup while walking the two long blocks from University Place to Sixth Ave. This oatmeal is very stick-to-your-ribs-y, just the way I like it. (Vani, you should definitely give it another shot because it hasn’t been watery for me either time!)

There were two exciting packages waiting for me when I got home. First, my free sample of Quaker mini delights arrived! I love free things:

img_4265

But even more exciting was this care package from my mama!! In addition to two of her homemade Valentine’s treats, she sent two eye masks from my stepdad. I am soooooo going to be able to sleep late this weekend :-D.

img_4267img_4266

Mom’s treats included a chocolate-drizzled oat bake and a chocolate-drizzled kitchen sink muffin heart:

img_4268

I’ve been anticipating this package ever since she sent me these gorgeous pics of the treats just out of the oven earlier this week:

img_0370

Thanks for brightening my week, mom! I’ll be thinking of you as I eat these :-D.

Dinner part 2 was a bit of a repeat from last night. I had just over 1/2 cup of heated “pumpkin plus” puree with a toasted morningstar Asian veggie patty:

img_42791

Are you wondering what’s in the background?? Yes, it’s dinner part 3: the dark chocolate-covered orange slice that Brandi sent as part of my BSI: Spinach prize!

img_42741

So to review, I ate a lot, learned about appropriate social work behavior, and helped a friend. All in all, an ethically sound day…. Were you ethical today?

I’m off to go finish up some work homework and get into bed. I know I’m behind on blog- and comment-reading, but I will catch up this weekend, I promise.

Also, make sure you check out the amazing granola that is up for grabs at Mon’s Apetit!

Step by step

I tried to step it up this morning at the gym with my arm weights on the step + Stairmaster routine (thanks for all your suggestions last week!) by increasing the weights and switching from the “fat burner” to the “speed intervals” setting. It worked a little bit, but I think I need to up the Stairmaster level even more next time. Stats: 1 hour and 11 minutes, 378 calories, average heart rate 120, max 151.

My breakfast titles are getting longer and longer. Today, I had peanut butter chocolate strawberry cheesecake ice cream oatmeal:

img_4184

Along with 3/4 cup of the oatmeal mxture and the usual crumbled graham sticks and 1/3 cup cream cheese icing, I added 1 tsp peanut butter and one chopped square of the Lindt chocolate hazelnut bar I got from blogger secret cupid 🙂

img_4183

I obviously don’t need to tell you how good it tasted.

On the side I had 1/2 an orange and soymilky black tea (very soymilky — probably 1/2 cup because there was more left in the carton than I expected):

Lunch and snacks today should be nearly identical to what I ate yesterday, but I’ll be back tonight with an update, as usual. In the meantime, go enter the BSI!

Happy Wed-nes-day!

It’s time …

Reading in bed last night was glorious … and I managed to turn the lights out at 8pm!! I got up at 5am today raring to go :-D. Gym was the 45-minute treadmill run again. I felt less tired doing it than I have before … yet I burned more calories. Go figure. Stats: 1 hour and 2 minutes, 524 calories, average heart rate 145, max 179.

Breakfast was more strawberry cheesecake ice cream oatmeal. I had about 2/3 cup heated with 1/2 cup cream cheese icing on the side and cinnamon and two crumbled graham sticks sprinkled on top:

img_4136

I’m out of fresh strawberries, so I had 1/2 cup grapes on the side and a giant mug of spicy cinnamon peanut butter hot chocolate:

img_4132

The hot chocolate contained 1 cup water, 1/2 cup unsweetened soymilk, 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder, 1 tsp sugar in the raw, 1 tsp peanut butter, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper … oh, and a sugar cookie sleigh ride tea bag 🙂

img_4138

Yummmmmmmmm! So now that I’ve checked exercise and chocolate off the list, I think I’m ready to face the new week. To work I go!

Party in a bowl

First, thank you to the Professional Vegan for guest-posting this morning! It freed me up to get a good chunk of work done :-).

Rewinding to last night, I was in a munchy mood when I got home:

img_4058

My baby sampler plate consisted of apple butter, a prune, peanut butter, and a date … the combo of textures and tastes was an exciting mouth adventure :-).

Pre-sampler, my wild night out was a success. Ting, Jem, and I parked ourselves on the couch and watched the Sunday night lineup on Showtime. Who knew such shows existed?? I wish I had cable … though I’m normally in bed by 9pm so I doubt I’d actually get around to watching it. Ting and I also had a little non-food photo shoot … which we probably haven’t done since we were 16!

I got to bed a little bit after 12 and slept until 7:30, plthhhhh. So need to hunt down an eye mask for sleeping!

Since today’s a holiday for me, I made a bowl of party oats. Invitees to the party included 1/2 cup strawberry cheesecake ice cream oats mixed with 1/3 cup homemade apple butter:

img_4072

Healthy cream cheese frosting (1/4 cup nonfat yogurt + 1/4 cup nonfat ricotta, cinnamon, vanilla, honey, coconut, chopped dates, unsweetened shredded coconut):

img_4075

My last dark chocolate Adora calcium disk (thanks, Tina!), melted:

Chopped strawberries:

A dollop of light whipped cream, 2 crumbled graham sticks, and more unsweetened shredded coconut:

Party in a bowl:

With skylight jasmine green tea on the side:

And now, back to productivity! How was your morning?

Systematic food maintenance

Breakfast this morning was strawberry cheesecake ice cream oatmeal!

img_3985

I’m trying to use up all the things that need to be used, so I made a big batch of this concoction. Good thing it is delicious! Into the pot went a little bit over 1 cup of whey from Greek yogurt-making, 1 cup of “ice cream” mixture from yesterday‘s strawberry cheesecake ice cream (minus the red velvet crumbs), a few freezer burned strawberries and blueberries I found during the deep-clean yesterday, a chopped frozen banana, 1 cup of cooked brown basmati rice from two weeks ago, 1/2 cup dry old-fashioned oats, and 2/3 cup instant white grits. I ate about 3/4 cup of the final product topped with a chopped strawberry and cinnamon (obv). And jasmine green “artwork” tea on the side:

img_39901

I feel so relaxed today after organizing everything in the kitchen last night! I hope the roommates don’t kill me when they get home and can’t find any of their stuff . But just look at how beautiful and easy everything is! Here’s the pantry with tea on the top shelf, common staples (oats, olive oil, sea salt) and coffee on the next, Brig and Tara’s canned foods on the next, and my whole grains on the bottom:

img_3988And the cupboard with Brigitte’s baking mixes, flour, and sugar (and my whole wheat flour wayyyy on the right) on the top; her rices, pastas, and sauces on the next shelf; and our spices and seasonings on the bottom:

img_3986

And finally, the pièce de résistance: the freezer! Specially marked cardboard boxes for Brig’s ice packs, breads, and meats are on the left; her leftovers are in the middle; and my leftovers are on the right:

img_3987

Poor Tara doesn’t buy much food because finding space for it is such a painful process. I don’t blame her. Hopefully the new system will help her out … and last more than a week!

I’m off to tackle the next thing on my list. Thank goodness I have tomorrow off! Do you?
