Sample questions answered

But first, a quick(ish) rundown of today’s food!

Since I’m rich with eggs right now (to say the least), I whipped one french-toast-style with soymilk, cinnamon, and vanilla and cooked it in a canola’d pan like a crepe. That became the base of my breakfast rainbow.

Next up, I had 1/3 cup of prune groatmeal left last night, so I mixed it with 1/4 cup BRM Extra Thick Oats and a chopped Hershey’s Kiss, flattened it to rest in the fridge overnight, and came out with a breakfast cookie this morning. That went on top of the egg.

Third was a thick layer of pumpkin cream cheese icing. Fourth was a half cup or so of fruit salad. Finally, my last tbsp of sunflower seed butter plopped itself right on top with a sprinkling of unsweetened coconut.

Pre-breakfast, I did 10 reps of this excellent inchworm exercise that Olga recommended to me to help with my leg drama. I loved it! I also did *most* of the 20-minute Morning Flow #1 class from yogadownload.com. I have so much trouble sticking with it once I get to the lying down part at the end! The to-do list starts racing through my mind, and I have to get up and move. Thursdays are my usual run outside days, but my glute/groin issue was giving me grief yesterday. It’s been a month since I injured it, and the pain is still not all the way gone, so I decided to stop pushing the running when it hurts. Hopefully, it just needs some rest.

I had to head up to Hunter early today for a child abuse workshop, so between that, class, and group advisement, I was up there pretty much all afternoon. And I was so munchy that I had eaten all my lunch and snacks by 11! I began with an orange and an apple banana just after the workshop started at 9:

An hour or so into the workshop, I pulled out my 1/2 cup fresh yogurt mixed with the last 1/2 cup fruit salad and sprinkled with golean crunch.

In the 30 seconds between the workshop and class, I heated my mushroom agnostuff and promptly ate it at the start of class, thereby putting myself significantly ahead of food schedule (the only schedule I can follow, apparently) by eating lunch at 11 am:

A Kraft LiveActive chocolate raspberry bar (I was in a rush packing this morning!) quickly followed the ravioli:

And that was the end of the food I had packed, the horror! And I still had four more hours before home, yikes. Luckily, I was pretty satisfied after all of that … except that I kept thinking about Tasti-D. As class went on and on about brief treatment interventions, my mind was screaming: tasti-d tasti-d tasti-d tasti-d! I downed an entire roll of Newman’s Own Organics peppermints in my restlessness.

The moment advisement ended at 2, I beelined straight to 86th St. to answer the call. The sample gods were watching because a tasti-d girl had just come out with tray full of them! I grabbed a peanut butter fudge taste:

A lesson in SAMPLING

Speaking of samples, you all seem quite curious about my sampling, errr, “habit.” How do I get stores to give me samples? Do I make up stories about how much I’ve always wanted to try a certain food? Do I pretend I’m in the market to buy? How do I transport the samples out of the store?

It’s really not nearly so complicated!

Years of hunting down food in the city have clued me in to the locations that typically have samples out for the taking. I operate on the belief that, if a store has put samples out, they are for eating. I generally don’t ask to taste things that are not already displayed as samples (unless I’m in an ice cream store where flavor perfection is critical).

Some of you seem to feel a sort of moral hesitance to sample foods if you are not planning to buy them. Frankly, I never sample with intention to buy (unless, again, I am in an ice cream store). The stores that typically have samples available — around me, it’s Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Union Market, Butterfield Market, Citarella, among others — are out of my food budget range. One of the few perks of living in NYC, I suppose, is the plethora of teeny gourmet food shops; if you live here, you can undoubtedly identify one of these stores at a glance and walk in pretty confident with your knowledge that there will be a pile of fancy cheese and toothpicks waiting, if nothing else.

As much as I love samples, however, they can be dangerous. If I hit one of these stores at the right time, I could eat an entire meal’s worth of food (or more) just by browsing the aisles. For this reason, I transport samples out of the store whenever possible. Eating samples as part of a meal, rather than absentmindedly on-the-go, increases satisfaction tremendously. As much as I would love to whip out my tupperware containers and start filling them with samples, however, even I have to draw the line somewhere and use my best judgment to determine whether that is appropriate (and sometimes it is). I don’t want to get myself blacklisted!

In the case of cheese samples, I do get a bit crazily schemy. For example, you may have noticed that every Monday night, I stop into Butterfield Market on the way to class to pick up manchego cheese samples as a dinner supplement. I generally have an empty snack baggie somewhere in my possession left from lunch, and I put that in my coat pocket. I walk into the store, stab a few cubes of cheese with a toothpick, and stroll through the rest of the store considering “potential purchases” while I deposit the cheese into the baggied pocket. On the way out of the store, I grab one more toothpick and do the same.

The rest of the time, however, I just gather the samples in my hand in the little plastic sample cups where they usually reside and walk out of the store with them. If it’s not a messy thing, I slip the cup into my pocket to free up my hands, but I don’t try to hide it. Occasional squishing may occur, but I’m not one to turn down food due to shape disruption.

The bottom line is that samples are for sampling, and you’re under no obligation to purchase if you decide to partake. Chances are, none of the staff in the store will even notice or care that you’re taking samples; if they do, they’ll be thrilled that their marketing strategy appears to be working. And if they’re grumpy or rude, they’re obviously unhappy in their line of work, and it has nothing to do with you. Sample away!

Pieces

I had more prune groatmeal for breakfast this morning, but I switched things up on the flax oat bran side by mixing in 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder and 2 tbsp PB2:

I sprinkled some of the dry PB2 on top and then sprinkled hot water over that to enhance the peanut-flavor prominence. I find that PB2 often gets lost when I mix it in. If you look closely, you can see a bit of marbling from this highly intricate procedure:

If you haven’t caught on already, I surrounded the oats with a ring of fruit salad and topped it all with unsweetened coconut:

I had my glass of water and some soymilky almond sunset/black tea on the side:

There was also some gymming somewhere in there: 20 mins on the Stepmill, hip abductor/adductor, glutes, and chest on the cybex, 15 minutes elliptical, stretching/abs, jogs there and back. Stats: 1 hour and 18 minutes, 519 calories, 133 average heart rate, 176 max.

I had a meeting all morning at work, so I was starving when it ended at 11. Myrna came over to donate the rest of her breakfast sandwich from McDonald’s since she couldn’t finish it. I had a couple teeny bites of sausage and then put the rest away for later:

I had back-to-back visits planned that would keep me out of the office from 12:30 to 3:30, so I ate lunch at noon even though I wasn’t quite hungry yet. Lunch was made of leftovers and scraps, as usual.

In class on Monday night, Lisa gave me a big slice of multi-grain bread that she had left over from her Hale & Hearty soup. I sliced the bread in half “the long way” to make two thinner slices of equal surface area. I started with one slice and topped it with leftover smoked salmon salad from last night’s Eggland’s Best event:

I finished it with time to spare, and it was even more delicious than anticipated, so I ate the other half right then as well:

When I got back from my visit at 3:30, I found a note from Deborah waiting for me at my desk: “Sarah, I have food left from lunch on my desk. You can come take.” Music to my ears, especially since Deborah had been waxing poetic about her mom’s stewed turkey during the morning meeting! I went to Deborah’s desk and helped myself to a bite of turkey with some of the accompanying rice and beans:

I’m actually hungry for dinner tonight, so that should be coming along soon. And thanks for all the eggciting (I promise I’ll stop with the eggsaggerated “egg” usage soon — it’s so addictive) egg recipes. I can’t wait to get started 🙂

Pieces or cups? I prefer cups, but I obviously don’t discriminate against pieces!

Throw it away

Eek!! Just kidding. You know I’d never ever recommend that you throw anything away. Except for maybe this post. I’m just going to slap down everything I ate today so that I can hurry and get to the main event: my eggcelent dinner! (That was a hint.)

Morning snack was a cup of pumpkin pie flax pudding:

I heated it today — still yummy, but I think I like it better cold. It really tastes/feels just like pumpkin pie filling. I guess that makes sense since flax is a known substitute for eggs, and the only thing I’d do differently to make pumpkin pie would be to add eggs and bake …

And then I was off to Free Cone Day. Just kidding! I got to the B&J at Rockefeller, but the line was way too long for me to make it through in the 10 minutes I had before my eggstatic dinner event, so I had to skip the ice cream. Tear.

If I didn’t have to sleep

Last week, I bought this little bunch of “apple bananas” at a fruit shop near my office in East Harlem.

They were the color that I normally love bananas, but apparently partly green is a no-go in the world of apple bananas. I took one bite and thought my tongue had fallen out because I could no longer feel it. Guess they weren’t ripe yet! I let them sit for the weekend and then decided to revisit one for my snack this morning. For size orientation:

And I could actually taste the apple flavor in there!

Inginia and I had our group this afternoon, and while Inginia put together a fun lunch spread (as usual), I worked some kitchen magic to make blue playdough for the kids:

For lunch, I had 1.5 thin slices of French-ish bread with Inginia’s mustardy tuna salad:

Some parents brought in an Entenmann’s walnut danish ring (whyyyyyyyy?), so I had two small slices (with another little dabble of pb on the side):

The same parent also brought in a carton of Dole strawberry banana orange juice.  I usually only drink water because I’m a much bigger fan of eating than drinking, but I had to have a sip because I used to love these juices when I was little. My sip did not disappoint!

After the group, I relieved my tuna breath with a Newman’s ginger mint, the best breath mint ever.

I think I had four of these over the course of the day/evening.

Later in the afternoon, it was orange time! Note the neat edges on those orange peels thanks to my fancy schmancy orange peeler from Myrna:

I also had a small handful of these pita chips from Jessica. So salty and garlicky, mmmmmmmmm:

I had my first course of dinner right before I left work around 5:20: a cup of the pumpkin-sofrito Buitoni’s mushroom agnosomething and 3-grain tempeh that I made last night.

My second course took place in class with variation #2 of flax pudding because Heather was looking for a tofu-free method (and because I was out of tofu AND yogurt):

For that pumpkin pie flax pudding, I brought 1.5 cups unsweetened soy milk to a boil with 6 tbsp ground flax, cinnamon/nutmeg/cloves/ginger, and 2 chopped dates. After a couple of minutes there, I immersion blended in 1.5 cups of canned pumpkin and poured the mix into a container to chill in the fridge overnight. For my purposes, one serving equals one cup — so this recipe makes 3-4 servings.

It would probably also work without the pumpkin because the flax seems to have incredible gelling properties. It just might come out a little bit looser.

Next up was my snack/dessert baggie with manchego cheese samples from the gourmet deli, two of mom’s kitchen sink muffins with sunflower seed butter for spreading, and sample pieces of Tate’s Bakeshop chocolate chip cookies from the deli:

When I got home tonight, I snacked a bit while I got tomorrw’s food ready … as in I shoveled big piles of fruit salad and groatmeal into my mouth too fast to photograph them. What’s a girl to do when it won’t all fit in the container??

I was also super-excited to find that my first issue of Eating Well had arrived! I won the subscription from Brandi a little while ago, and I can’t wait to start reading it 😀 Sadly, I can’t start yet because I have to go to bed ASAP.

Oh, one more thing (about me again, because obviously the world revolves around me) … I got hired!! Thanks to the tireless efforts of Heather, my supervisor, my amazing unpaid internship has miraculously found space in the budget to hire me full-time after the internship ends on May 8. I’ll officially start on June 1. I’ll be able to keep doing what I currently do (and what I love to do!) about 1/3 of the time; the other 2/3 will be a different more paperwork-based job but still good experience. So, not only will I continue to get my social work experience; I will also learn a new system and have a small amount of financial stability to get me through the last year of grad school. Phew!

Yup, I’m fully blogging in bed right now — in my pjs, under the covers, teeth brushed, mouth guard in place, contacts out, glasses on, earplugs in, and ready to pass out as soon as I hit publish. Can’t wait 😀

But let’s do a little review of the day first, shall we? I walked into the office at 9:20, and the first thing Belkis said was, “Sarah, there’s bread in there.” [Gestures to conference room right next to my desk.] And bread there was!

Belkis had brought in a whole loaf of bakery-fresh Dominican bread. The thought of saying no never crossed my mind. I cut off a big slab, about an inch thick, and dipped it in my milky earl grey tea. I think that might be a little weird. I dunk everything — cookies, crackers, bread. How do you feel about soggy carbs?

After my big slab o’ bread, I went back for the end pieces:

I’m not crazy about the heels of regular sandwich loaves, but they’re always my favorite part of any kind of fresh bread or baked good … brownies from the edge of the pan, yum!

After that loaf-fest, I didn’t really get hungry again until about 2pm! As an appetizer, I had two of these little balls that Inginia (of the pumpkin kibbi fame) brought in. She slaved away all weekend making them for a party and wanted to share the wealth:

This is also from some Middle-Eastern dish, and I’m not sure of the exact ingredients. I think Inginia is going to bring me the recipe, but in the meantime, they were basically fried bulgur dumplings with some ground meat and seasonings inside:

Very tasty! Once I get the recipe, I’ll see how I can go about healthifying them — I think they’d also be delicious baked.

Lunch was a cup of spinach-chickpea dal:

Around 3:45, I had three Kavli crispy thin crackers with 1/3 cup homemade guacamole (1/3 mashed avocado, 2 tbsp salsa, juice from 1/4 lime):

I went into a session a little after 4, and when I got back to my desk after, this sight greeted me:

Yes, two potatoes mysteriously showed up on my desk. Apparently, I am now the designated recipient for anonymous food drops (but I’m not complaining!). Potato donor, reveal yourself!! Even though potatoes are the one food that I seriously dislike (this rule does not apply to sweet potatoes, obvi), I am clearly the best person to take on the task of finding them a new home. At this moment, I imagine the potatoes are journeying into the depths of Brooklyn with Gina … and I have full confidence in Gina’s ability to use them appropriately!

Because I was planning on running club at 6:30, I decided to have an early 5pm dinner at work. Especially since the club no longer gives free food after (grrrrrr!), I have found that this dinner-first arrangement works well (at least it has worked well all two times that I’ve done it, haha) to keep me energized through the run and not wanting to gnaw my arm off after. The dinner I packed for tonight was 1/3 wheat bagel with 1/4 cup pumpkin-pb spread (1 T peanut butter, 3 T pumpkin) and two black bean-salmon patties:

I toasted the whole thing in the work toaster oven, and it was so delicious and saucy, mmm:

I followed that advice and had another mint as I walked out the door :P.

Gina, Kate, and I met at 6:30 for running club and did 4 sort of stop-and-go miles in Central Park, including a loop around the reservoir, one of the most beautiful places to run in the city at night! But Kate and I were talking after about how these running club runs just seem to drag for ages. We ran over 9 miles on Saturday with minimal struggling, but 4 miles at running club always does us in! I wonder if it has to do with the time of day …. Anyway, stats for the run: 49 minutes, 357 calories, average heart rate 140, max 156.

In the subway station post-run, I broke out the breadstick and marinara sauce that Jessica and Nydia brought back for me from Pizza Hut because they couldn’t finish it at lunch. Kate, Gina, and I split the bounty between the three of us after Kate and Gina hand-modeled the goods for me:

I had my final snack of the night when I got home: 1/4 of a broiled banana (the banana also came from Belkis today) topped with 1/4 cup chocolate mousse and a tbsp toasted pumpkin seeds:

While I was washing dishes and before I was able to drag my mouth to the toothbrush, I may have also peeled off one whipped cream-soaked cookie from Brigitte’s remaining log of birthday cake and eaten one or two pieces of Lindt hazelnut chocolate …

I was reading the January issue of Self while I was on the elliptical this morning, and I found a little blurb in there about the dangers of resting your laptop computer directly on your lap — I think it mentioned causing irritation to your thighs and emitting radiation that can lead to cancer (like everything does) and suggested using some sort of lap tray between your legs and the computer. (As I type this, of course, my laptop is directly on my lap.) Does this worry you? Where do you rest your laptop? Do you put something between your legs and the computer?
