Limbs of lead

I woke up with a growling tummy this morning. How is that possible after all I ate yesterday? Empty calories will do it every time, I suppose. I had a giant spoonful (about 1/4 cup) of fruit salad from yesterday’s produce leftovers before heading out for my run around 7.

I kept the run short — about 2.5 miles — because my legs still feel like lead from the re-introduction of a different strength workout (scroll down to find the “Reach Your Goal 2008 Workout” video here) on Tuesday morning, and I wanted to leave enough time for a thorough stretch with yogadownload’s Gentle Hatha #1. This run was so tedious — my hamstrings just refused to warm up. And I don’t know if my HRM was acting up or if my heart was really going wild at some point along the way, but look at how high it went! Stats: 28 minutes, 212 calories, average heart rate 143, max 216. Coming back in for the yoga (and for breakfast) was a big relief.

I heated 3/4 cup banana bread crockpot oats and added 1/2 cup yogurt, sprinkles of nutmeg and coconut, and a spoonful of peanut butter.

I had the oats with my soymilky black tea and a flower because I was trying to channel the breakfast romance that Miss Banana Cabana conjurs every morning with her breakfast arrangements:

(But I don’t think my arrangement had quite the same effect as hers, somehow.)

I was in the mood for more of a mess, so I splattered the pb from my spoon all over the oats to shake things up:

I left at 10 to head up to Hunter for the day. I usually have class on Thursdays, but it was cancelled today for Common Day. Hunter does this a few times every year with lectures and workshops on a single theme (today’s theme was racism) from 11am to 7pm. Ummmm, 11am to 7pm?? The other girls in my program and I lasted until 2. Hopefully they still let us graduate .

Before leaving the apartment this morning, I threw together a bunch of random things that I hoped would get me through the afternoon. (If I’m not eating during lectures, I usually end up sleeping.) At 11, I had a snack baggie with carrots from yesterday and a tbsp of peanut butter:

At 12, I had my last two stuffed kale leaves:

At 12:07, I had 1/2 cup yogurt with chopped banana, chopped pear, cardamom, nutmeg, and a sprinkle of kashi golean crunch:

At 12:16, I had another cup of fruit salad:

I was trying to pace myself, but the minutes were passing at the speed of years, and I had nothing to distract me from my bag o’ food and minimal hunger pangs. I took a little break from eating and then had my first-ever Kraft LiveActive bar at 12:52:

The bar was fine — it was very berry-y and chocolate-y and tasted like a candy bar — but I doubt I’d buy these again. I only got them in the first place because I had a coupon, and I’d really rather have a piece of real food than a bar any day! But, I can’t deny that bars are good in a pinch, never go bad, and have decent mouth-entertainment value … for about 49 seconds.

After the bar, I took a 15 minute nap in my chair. Until I realized the speaker was calling on a girl directly behind me and the entire auditorium had swiveled in my direction. Awesome. That woke me up for the last 10 minutes. Falling asleep was hard work and made me hungry, so I dug around for my one remaining snack:

Like I said, we busted out of there as soon as the talk was over at 2 (no small breakout groups for us!) … and again, I hope they’ll still let us graduate! I’m now home and resting my aching hamstrings. I really do feel like I’ve been dragging solid blocks of lead around all day. Maybe that’s why I’m so tired.

The table of doom

How lucky can a girl get? :-D. I started the day with a two-hour staff meeting. During the meeting, I saw one of the therapists hovering suspiciously near my desk (because, if you recall, my desk is right near the conference room). When I got out of the meeting at 11, I found this enormous container of soup waiting for me!

Thanks, Nitza! The soup was HUGE and chunky and full of spices and seasonings and smelled like sofrito, mmmm. It was obviously too large for me to have all at once, so I decided I should set to work making a smaller container available! Yogurt to the rescue:

In addition to 1/2 cup of yogurt, the mix also contained chopped banana, chopped pear, nutmeg, cardamom, and a sprinkle of kashi golean crunch.

As soon as the yogurt was gone, I rinsed the container, filled it with a cup of soup, and put it in the fridge to rest for a few.

No sooner had the soup gone into the fridge than Myrna came zooming up to my desk with a dramatic whisper, “Sarah, I have CAKE.” Uh oh. (Side note: It was still only like 11:12 am at this point.) She unloaded her prize onto the infamous conference room table (again, right next to my desk). The cake was left over from a Dora-themed birthday party her daughter had gone to at Chuck-E-Cheese. Look at the cute Dora sticker on the foil wrapping!

And colorful frosting! I cut myself 1/3 of the piece she brought in (that piece over to the right) and split the other 2/3 between Jessica and Belkis so I wouldn’t be tempted to eat it all:

It turned my lips blue and my teeth pink. Whoops.

We had another meeting at noon. My supervisor, Heather, had promoted it as “bring your own lunch, and we’ll have some extra snacks and desserts.” Uh oh again. As per her instructions, I brought my own lunch. A cup of Nitza’s chunky soup (or at least it was a cup before the container tipped over completely in the bumpy microwave and lost all of its broth):

This soup was so hearty and delicious with those big chunks of meat and veggies. (And I had enough to bring two more cups home! Again, who’s the luckiest girl in the world?)

I also brought along the two-layer lunch I had packed. The top layer was three stuffed kale leaves:

And the bottom layer was a chopped tomato mixed with fat free feta:

picture-098img_4644And then there was the snack spread: baby carrots, tortilla chips, red pepper strips, french onion dip, salsa, red grapes, green grapes, apples, hershey’s kisses, chewy chips ahoy cookies, etc…. My agency seems incapable of doing food in a small way (which is just fine with me :-D).

I was impressed with the selection of fresh goods, so I made myself a produce sampler platter of peppers, carrots, salsa, apple slices, and grapes. I had two small plates that looked like this (note the child-sized pretend oven I was using as a table in the background):

I was quite satisfied after all of that (understandably), so I contented myself with 1/2 a cookie because it was right there:

There were tons of snacks left over at the end of the meeting, so of course I swept all of the remaining produce into a plastic bag to bring home (along with half a jar of salsa):

Back up at my desk, though, some unfortunate (or fortunate, depending on your perspective ;-)) things happened. Both of my afternoon visits rescheduled which meant I didn’t need to leave the office for the rest of the day. Good for catching up on work, but dangerous for the temptation that the conference room table often brings! Within moments, Rosalie (the one who missed her own work anniversary party with the mocha-frosted chocolate cake) made a triumphant return to the department with this “taste of heaven on earth”:

It was an extra chocolate crumb cake that had been donated to the advocacy department downstairs. Ahhhh! And it went straight to the conference room table with me hot on its trail. There was a layer of chocolate cake on the bottom, the thickest layer of crumb topping I’ve ever encountered on top of that, and dark chocolate drizzle over the whole thing:

I had just prepared myself a little bowl of tortilla chip crumbs (because the leftover meeting snacks ended up on the conference room table, of course), so I cut myself a piece of the cake and threw it on top of the crumbs. And then, because I live on the wild side, I mashed the cake up into the crumbs for the ultimate salty sweet experience (I also mixed in a teeny bit of peanut butter, but shhhhh, don’t tell):

Before I ate the cake, Jessica and I cut up the rest and made sure that everyone in the office got some, regardless of interest, because I wasn’t about to sit with the rest of that thing taunting me all afternoon! Once the cake was distributed, I sat down for some quiet time with my bowl.

I can’t lie. I felt a little bit ill after all that.

I needed something salty. Good thing I had chips and dip mere inches from my mouth. I scooped up the remaining chip crumbs and the dip-covered spoon (I covered the rest of the dip and put it in the fridge because no one needs that hanging around):

And because I just can’t win, the salt left me with a craving for these:

And then it was time to go home! I booked it out of there fast before I could do any more damage. Though I guess I’d already kind of seen to it that there was no damage left to do …

On the way home, Pura offered me half of her tangerine. I accepted because my mouth desperately needed a taste of health!

Thank goodness this internship coincides with my half-marathon training. I would be in BIG trouble otherwise :-D.

I’ve got a sushi dinner lined up with the Brooklyn girls tonight. I’m not particularly hungry, but I expect to find a way around that …

Run for your doughnut

I spent the morning wrestling with this crazy orange. Well, maybe I only spent 9.34 minutes wrestling with it, but it was enough to make me late for my visit. The darn skin was on so tight and by the time I got it all off, it was past the time when I needed to leave. So I took the orange with me at 10:47 and inhaled it as I speed-walked from the office to the visit, causing me to arrive at the apartment with frozen solid orange-fingers. The offensive fruit:

I got back to the office at 12:17 and sat down for lunch at 12:41 with all the ladies. (Yeah, I’m totally ballparking all these exact times.) Lunch today was the lunch I had packed for yesterday and forgone in favor of tacos and Inginia’s spaghetti. Four stuffed kale leaves (cold) and half of a baked sweet potato (hot):

I also enjoyed a bite of Belkis’ colorful and delicious tuna salad:

I’ve been saving that guy in my tissue box since Rosalie gave it to me last week, and there are still more where it came from! Looooove chocolate filled with things like that. It’s like a cadbury egg (my favorite candy) … except that it’s a square and dark chocolate and fruity instead of, hmmm, yellow?

3:30 snack was a bag of air:

Oh, whoops, did I say air? I don’t know what’s wrong with me tonight. I meant to say a bag full of chocolate-drizzled Quaker mini delights:

They may as well have been air, though. They tasted fine, but my tummy had no clue whatsoever that it had just been fed. Luckily I went into another session at 4, so I didn’t have the chance to pour a candy jar down my throat or do something equally productive.

Post-work and pre-run, while still at the office a bit after 5, I made myself a sweet little 400-calorie “snack” (aka dinner). I picked this bar up (along with approximately five others) during a staff meeting last month:

And I decided that tonight was the perfect night to christen it (with a few embellishments of course). I heated the bar in the microwave for 30 seconds and almost stopped there … but inspiration struck:

I placed a Hershey’s Kiss from the tissue box on top of the hot banana nut bar and let it melt:

And then — are you ready? — I swirled about a tbsp of peanut butter into the chocolate:

It tasted terrible.

As I walked out at 5:32, I popped a werther’s in my mouth to “fuel” me through the four-block walk to the subway station:

Kate and I did four miles at The Club. Stats, including an additional 10 minutes of warmup/stretching: 48 minutes, 338 calories, 136 average heart rate, 166 max. Nike still hasn’t brought the post-run fruit buffet back (grrrr), but I did snag about 10 caramel nut brownie mini-lunas (the only flavor I tolerate). At this rate, my mini-Luna stash is going to outlive me — I eat them so infrequently because they taste like chemicals. On the train ride home, Kate and I celebrated Fat Tuesday with half a donut and half an apple each:

I did not know today was Fat Tuesday or even what Fat Tuesday really was until I read this post about donuts at Bites of the Day. All I knew was that the nurses (of all people) at my agency were enjoying an unusually exciting meeting in the conference room, mere inches from my desk. When I saw them extract a bakery-fresh box of donuts, my eyes kind of turned into donut magnets and did not let the box out of my sight. The nurses all took off for the day before I did, leaving three donuts remaining on the conference room table to go stale overnight, the horror. I had to intervene. I convinced Nydia and Katty that they needed donuts stat, and I kept the third one for myself (or for splitting with Kate after the run). Here’s my sugar-coated fluffy bundle of joy:

I was home by 8:26 (yay for no subway drama!). I nibbled while prepping tomorrow’s breakfast and lunch and then ate these from the kitchen table centerpiece:

Are you still awake?

Work, taco, work, taco, class, taco

Comí muchos tacos hoy.

But it all started with an orange at 10:30 am to fuel me through my 11:00 visit:

I got back to the office slightly after noon, just in time for the parents’ group with Inginia. For the group, Inginia made spaghetti with chunky tomato sauce, chicken, and corn. It was such good comfort food and of course became my lunch even though I had brought one from home. I had two small bowls:

And then one of the moms in the group brought a surprise treat: homemade tacos!! I had two of these as well:

They had chicken and tomato inside, mmmm:

picture-044I probably would have eaten several (read: at least 7) more if I hadn’t had to run out at 1:40 to get to my 2:00 visit. On my way out of the office, I tried to placate the taco breath with this candy. The jar is out of mints again, so I grabbed what appeared to be a cinnamon … but it was cherry, blech. I ate it anyway.

picture-052As soon as I got back from my visit, the little girl I see for counseling arrived, so no time for a snack! Immediately following our session, however, I rustled through the tissue box for the last Russell Stover dark chocolate of the four I swiped from Jessica’s Valentine’s stash last week.

I left work at 5:20 and made my way down to Hunter for class … which was actually interesting tonight. Probably because we talked about some of my favorite topics: infant brain development, parent-infant attachment, etc. Class started at 6, and by 6:15, I had broken out a “dinner” cup of work leftovers. On top of the cup are some samples of manchego cheese (yum!) I scored from the gourmet deli that’s right by school. I chopped up the cheese and mixed it into a bit of leftover corn from lunch:

On top of the corn in the cup was another taco — this one was left over from my coworker Nydia’s lunch, and she donated it to the feed-Sarah cause :-P. Her taco was from a restaurant and had some sort of potato-bean-meat mix inside. I normally despise potatoes, but the taco had enough flavor and texture variety that the taters didn’t really bother me:

And on top of that taco was another one of the chicken tacos from lunch (I swiped it as I left the group this afternoon to head out for my visit). For dessert part 1 around 6:45, I had the yogurt I packed this morning (with the intention of eating it for lunch part 2):

Dessert part 2 at 7:09 (I held out as long as I could!) was a cute little apple along with two dates and two prunes:

So in conclusion, I ate lots of reasonably portioned, healthyish food today. Expansion status: under control :-D.

Chained to the computer

Ahhh, technology is driving me insane! Hunter has this big push to make the social work program more “current” and is mandating that all courses have an online component. But the online Blackboard has SO many bugs, and it literally took me four hours to leave a comment about one of the articles I read for class. Gah!

Anywayyyyy, my quinoa salad from Friday night made its final appearance as today’s lunch. With more soymilky chocolate caramel enchantment chai (same tea bag, new water) and a stuffed tomato on the side:

Reassembly of the quinoa salad took place in much the same way as it did yesterday: salad greens on the bottom, warmed salad “substance” in the middle, re-toasted tortilla strips on the top:

I beefed up the salad by sauteeing the quinoa mix with the scrambled egg yolk and kale stems left from last night’s BSI adventures, 2 chopped asparagus spears, and 2 chopped mushrooms. I also mixed in 1/4 chopped cucumber and sprinkled 1/2 tbsp fat free feta on top:

For dinner, I finally got to try a substantial amount of each of my BSI: Kale creations. Three slices of Kale-Crust Pizza and three Stuffed Kale Leaves:

I had the stuffed leaves cold and reheated and re-crisped the pizza slices on a pizza stone in the oven.

Both of these were so delicious. I almost feel guilty saying that since they are my recipes, but ahh, I’m so impressed! The textures, the flavors … incredible. I always get surprised when my kitchen experiments work out. Thank goodness for the BSI — if I didn’t need to be creative and crafty, I probably would have been having steamed kale for dinner tonight!

Dessert was an assortment of little tastes:
